99 Ranger 4.0 rear springs
My rear leafs appear to be worn out. I'm trying to decide between the 4 leaf pack rated at 1,250 lbs and the 5 leaf pack rated at 1,750 lbs. I'll be driving on the highway some but I will be driving on gravel a lot also. Generally I won't be hauling much weight but sometimes I might haul a 1000# for shorter distances. The OEM springs that are on there now are 3 leaf whereas the ones at Rock Auto are 4 or more.
Any input would be appreciated!

Best setup for any pick up truck is soft leafs(light weight rating) and an overload leaf
For best power, steering, braking and general control you want all 4 wheels flat on the ground
Over sprung axle will cause a bad ride but will also cause weight to be lifted off that axle after a bump.
The spring rating needs to match weight on that axle so spring has something to push against, so it can act as a spring, absorb bumps, if spring rating is too high then you might as well just install a steel rod between axle and frame, spring can't act as a spring, when you hit a bump it just pushes up the weight like its not there, and wheels leave the road surface.
So spring rating you use should be for empty bed
An over load leaf doesn't touch the frame, until extra weight is added to the bed or trailer hitch, so you still have the 1/2 ton rating, or more, but better control when empty or half loaded
Cost is more but ride improvement and safety is worth it
