Timing belt
Ok everyone i just did the timing belt on my dads 93 ranger 2.3 everything went back together great spun engine around a couple times belt tight marks lined up went back with a new belt tensioner and water pump teeth all looked great was running good then 3 days later he calls and says a no start and oil light on now i haven't seen it yet as he lives 60 miles away and I'm just finding out now but wtf is going on it sounds like either it's jumped time or belt broke anything anyone knows would be greatly appreciated

There is a large "washer" that goes on to crank in front of timing gear, its called the belt guide, it keeps the belt from "walking off" the Cam and AUX gears when belt is spinning
And could take a few days for that to happen as the cover can hold the belt on for awhile

Do you remember if that was put back on?
Or if there were "extra" parts left over
But sure, a new timing belt could break, it would be rare, but not "never"
And could take a few days for that to happen as the cover can hold the belt on for awhile

And as far as I know the oil light should go off after 5 seconds or so of cranking engine, if oil pump is turning, most don't notice because engine is usually starting at that point so it goes off in any case
So that is a sign the AUX gear is not turning at all, so not just a slipped belt

Ok i told him to watch that oil light and make sure it goes off after 5 seconds cause I'm not sure how long he cranked it he claims it was 10 seconds but i told him to try again and watch it. as for it being broke he said he felt behind the timing cover up at cam and felt the belt was tight and said far as he could see it was on the cam sprocket fine another weird thing is he said truck was running good and he cut it off went to crank it back and no go. I'm kinda suspicious it may have another problem but i won't know for sure till i can get to the truck just going off what he's telling.

Take some Quick Start with you and do the 50/50 test
See if its Spark or Fuel issue, assuming compression is OK
The ICMs(spark modules) were an issue on 1989-1994 2.3l's
But usually showed signs of failing ahead of time, rough running after warm up
Crank sensor is the ONLY SENSOR that can cause a no start
With key on the CEL(check engine light) should come on, no CEL means computer is not on
CEL should go OFF while cranking engine over, this mean crank sensor is sending a timing pulse to the ICM, and the ICM is sending that pulse to Computer, and it turn off the CEL, confirming timing pulse received
And of course fuel pumps often fail that way, one day they work and then they don't, they usually don't fail while driving, just won't startup again after being shut off
You can ask if he hears it run for 2 seconds each time key is turned on, can repeat, key off and then on, as much as needed won't hurt anything
It a HUMMM from behind cab, its not quiet if you listen for it
And with a 1993 Computer there are the 3 capacitors that can leak and fail, $5 fix, but usually causes issues like rough running ahead of full failure

The light is yellow he said he's never seen a red oil light on it but that the yellow light come on when belt broke back before we did job. My guess is the yellow light must stay on till engine starts and since it won't start now or back when belt broke he assumed it had to do with timing belt
