ticking in head/valve cover area
I have a carbureted 83 2.3l and there is a ticking coming frome the under the valve cover. It's not the lifters because I just replaced all of them. There is a little wear on one of the cam lobes but other than that there is nothing else that I can see wrong with it.

Ford fuel injectors can get quite loud, and would have the same "tick" frequency as a valve train issue.
Longer hose, smaller size, can be used to hear each injector, also around timing cover.
You can also remove the fan belt on a cold engine and run it for 2 minutes without fan, water pump or alternator, this makes it fairly quiet in the engine bay, and easier to pin point a noise.
