Spark Plugs Question
#2
Yes and no, lol
Ford uses Waste Spark systems and 2 spark plugs share one coil in a coil pack, so these 2 spark plugs are wired in Series, this means that one spark plug sparks from center to tip(normal spark) and the other spark plug sparks from tip to center(reverse spark)
If you used regular copper(no coatings) all spark plug gaps would be equal after, say, 10k miles, but 1/2 would have worn tips, the other 1/2 worn centers making gap larger than new, but equal
If you used single platinum plugs(coated tip), then 1/2 the plugs would have less wear than the other 1/2, the coating reduces the wear on the spark plugs firing center to tip(normal spark)
If you use double platinum plugs(tip and center coated) then you would have less wear but equal wear on all plugs
So never use single coating spark plugs, its a waste of money since 1/2 the spark plugs will wear out the same as no coating at all
Ford use TWO different spark plugs at the factory, because when buying 1 million spark plugs its cheaper to use single coating, so they used single coated tips AND single coated centers which have different numbers
For someone buying just 6 or 8 spark plugs that doesn't make much sense(cents) so either get regular copper or Double coating
So one side of the 4cyl engine has 2 spark plugs that fire center to tip and 2 that fire tip to center but equal to other side, which is why "yes and no"
Ford did wire the coil packs so each cylinder has one of each, one center to tip and one tip to center spark plug
If you want to use regular copper and want spark plugs to last a bit longer to can re-wire spark plugs at the coil pack to reverse each so if it was firing center to tip you change it to tip to center, and change it every 5,000miles or so
Coil pack
1 4
2 3
swap it to
4 1
3 2
Same on the other one
4 1
3 2
change to
1 4
2 3
There was a "a spark plug mod" that circulated for awhile, that said you got more power but changing wires on just one coil pack, this would of course be hokum, not true, lol
But it would change each cylinder to the same center to tip, OR same tip to center, no real benefit or downside either

The reason I asked was that I wanted to replace my spark plugs the other day and when I removed the first one out of the exhaust side and its condition was fairly new. Therefore, I stopped the whole progress. The last time I replaced them was about 3 years ago (45000 miles approx). They are all regular copper ones.
