cylinder 4 misfire

Changed plug wires, plugs, coil, fuel injector cleaner and still no luck. No white smoke so hopefully no head gasket problems. Anywhere else I may have missed?

What kind of vehicle? Engine fuel and ignition systems vary. Need more info I think, though someone might be able to help you without it.

Get a spark tester from a auto store and check if you get anything, and also while you are at the store pick up a cylinder compression tester and test all the cylinders, they should all be about the same.

How do you test the cylinders? All the plugs are arcing, as a matter of fact the back two arc all the time, like to the harness.

You mean the plug wires are arcing all the time to the other wires? That ain't right if so.

Did your problem start before or after you made all these changes -- in other words, did you have the problem after replacing these things, or did you replace these things and then had the problem.

Fuel injector cleaner won't fix certain injector problems. If it's not ignition, the next most likely thing is a fouled injector, I would think.

I noticed it bogging down and it sounded like the muffler was blown. Then it threw the code, then I changed the wires et al. Its only the two on the back, when I pull them off the coil it arcs back to the harness.

Anyone? I am thinking about changing both the coils and maybe the injector tomorrow.

I've been dealing with the same thing. Here's what i did:

I ohm tested the coil pack per the Haynes manual and it checked out.

Swapped the #4 sparkplug with another cylinder. Code came back so it wasn't plugs.

Swapped the plug wire completely with another plug wire. The code came back so it wasn't the plugs.

I put fuel injector cleaner with the gas and the code continued to come back.

I swapped alternators with another one laying around and the code went away for good.

I swapped the alt cause I was getting a bad chirp from under the hood and thought this was the culprit. I didn't think it was related to the missfires. It might be that the battery being unhooked for 30 minutes reset all the sensors? I don''t know. But the problem is gone.

I dont see how the alternator could be related to the misfire but it might be worth a shot.

What was the engine code? Did you have a timing light? hook it to the wire and make sure they are all sparking normal.....

me neither. I think the battery geting unplugged may have been a factor. I don't know. I'm just glad it's gone. I was clearing the codes everytime I tried something new.

Ok, I dont see any problems. I have checked all the sensors and cables and everything now. After comp reset it acts fine for about 3 or so mon under load then it will bog down but still run ok. Just kinda sounds like the muffler is full of water.

It could be that the alternator isnt charging enough and making the computer not read correctly.

I am having the same problem. Did you ever find out what the problem was? I have a Cyl 2 misfire code. I have replaced plugs, wires, coil, ran fuel injector cleaner, even replaced the TPS as that was another code I had at the same time. My truck runs like absolute crap at idle and stalls out sometimes when its cold. It runs so-so at any kind of throttle input.

Any Ideas???

Please Help I am stuck.

2.3l and 4.0l #4 cylinder misfire

Camshaft synchronizer assembly is the issue. Monitor the knock sensor for verification. Replacing the CSA will fix the issue.

Misfire #4.
Okay so after replacing everything .. plugs wires coil pack o2 sensors overflow sensor throttle body gasket upper intake gasket file filter injectors, the engine light is still on and the code reads misfire cylinder 4. However here's where it gets stupid, the engine will idle until warmed up at 1200 rpm and then it will drop to 600 rpm and the engine light starts to blink. Step on the gas and it sputtered so bad and goes 5 mph. Am I losing compression? Once I turn it off and turn it back on again, then the blinking stops it runs somewhat normal who's got an answer for that?

It was the head. I ended up going to the junkyard here in MN and grabbed another 2.3 head. Stripped it down completely bought new valves, seats rockets springs. Probably could have gotten away with just valve seats. Pursue like a MF tiger.

Cylinder 4 misfire

So you had the same problem and you had to replace the head? Your engine light was on and would blink causing it to sputter? I threw the obII on it. It reads misfire cylinder 4 misfire on startup 1000 rpm and now it says system too lean bank 1. .. I just want to understand what i need to do. This is a 3.0 .. man what I would t give for my old 2.9 back.

The alternator? Wow how did that tie into the misfire, did you ever figure that out? That doesn't make any sense whatsoever however in not surprised. I thought I had transmission problems because it shifted so hard, and all of a sudden too. It turned out to be a spark plug wire that had come off...crazy .. I'll get mine tested... I hope this works..thanks for sharing
