Barely getting 200 miles per tank in my 2.5L

As the title says, I'm barely getting 200 miles per tank. The check engine light goes on and off throughout the day. I think I should be getting more from a 4 cyl. What kind of gas mileage do you guys get? Where should I start? Thanks.

what size tires are you running, i know when i ran 31's under my 2001, my mileage went in the crapper, also some of the hills around here don't help at all either

That could be the reason. I'm running on 31". She sure looks nice but if it's going to afect MPGs that much I'd rather sacrifice apearance. Thanks.

Gear swap it or downsize the tires to get your mileage back.

And wtf is with people going by miles per tank?

I do, but only to calculate my miles per gallon.

you should start by finding out what that cel is coming on for ( code it is throwing )

my guess would be for a bad 02 sensor,, or maybe bad throttle position sensor

x2 take it to autozone and they will read the code for you. Even if it flashes on and off. It will still have the code.

Yeah what those two said You need to start with reading the cel before you worry about tires.

I'm gonna get the codes first for sure. Tires are too expensive to go first. I'm thinking it could even be as simple as a fuel filter. Anyways, I'll be back with the codes. Thanks.

I'm getting about 230 miles a tank before the check gauge light comes on. I got the 16.5 gallon tank and the 2.5L. I used to get over 300

I think MPGs are technical information to COMPARE diferent vehicles in diferent situations.
"MPT" (miles per tank) in the other hand is THE DAILY REALITY.It's a more accurate data that reveals how much it hurts your pockets just by having some extra horse power. i.e. I fill-up my Ranger twice a month, against 3 to 4 times a month for my previous 4.0L Cherokee (nice car by the way)

I have 16.5 gallon tank, I think. something like that anyway. I'm lazy, so I let the gas run down to almost empty all the time before I fill it up. I usually get between 250 miles or so, give or take, which computes to be about 15-17 mpg. And that's with a 4.0 stock. So, yea, I'd say ur gas mileage is a little low.

Good info. Thanks. I also have the 16.5gallon tank with a 2.5. I bought it with the 31" tires, so I just know she should be doing better because tech data says I should be getting 22-27.

Question abouot gears: If I decide to play with gears, what woulbe a good ratio? Would the gears from a 4.0 or 3.0 or even some Explorers fit? And do any of them have a ratio over 4

What dictated getting the 16.5 tank vs. the 19.something tank? When the fuel light turns on for me I'm into the 17-18+ gallon range so i'm guessing I got the big tank.
