Auto Transmission - Overdrive question

I have a 99 Ranger. When I press the O/D button nothing happens. The light wont light up in the dash and it feels no different. Ive tried it while in park and Neutral. Any ideas on what could be the problem. It shifts fine normally so I know its not a problem with the transmission.

Thanks

does the light illuminate when you turn the key to on? if so, remove the steering column trim panels around the wheel and check the wiring pigtail from the shifter for chafing where it touches the steering column

The light does not illuminate when the key is turned to on. Are the trim panels hard to remove and how would I go about replacing the wiring if its bad?

the light i feel should illuminate during key on prove out or during cranking. if the light does not, it could be something as easy as a burned out bulb but odds are the switch is bad. do you have tilt wheel?

remove the three screws and the lock cylinder bezel and take them off and look for chafing in the wiring
