1997 ranger 2.3l with rough, surging idle, cracked convertor.
So last week I picked this truck up pretty cheap, or as cheap as you can nowadays. Im having a hard time finding a cause of the low/surging and slightly rough idle on it, doesnt seem to go away at high or low temp. It has no CEL or DTCs. So far I have: changed all 8 plugs and wires, coils seem to be working, hooked a timing light to each wire while running and all seems normal. Ceaned and checked th MAF sensor, it electrically checks good. Cleaned and inspected the IACV and when unplugged with the engine Idling it drops rpm and nearly shuts off. Fuel pressure is 30psi and then 40psi with regulator unplugged. Have capped off vacuum lines and havent found a leak. Compressio ntest was 150ish on all cylinders with engine cool. Today I took a look at the converter, since there is an exhaust leak in the area around there. Well i found the leak, ther convertor case is nearly cracked in half. It got hot at some point. Real hot. See pictures, one of top case and one of the inlet side. Could this convertor be a cause of my problem or a symptom of a rich condition?
