spyder headlights

Hey guys,

does anyone have any experience with Spyder headlights? I have an 03 flareside extended cab ranger, and have been looking for some aftermarket headlights. I think they look good, but I just want to make sure they don't melt, or rattle to much, etc.

Thanks for the help!

P.S. If you don't have Spyders but have some other aftermarket headlights that look good and have been reliable, please let me know! (maybe with some pictures?)

In my experience, aftermarket projectors don't work that great as-is. They work better if you put HIDs in them, but ultimately they work the best if you retrofit them.

I was just looking at the same lights, thinking of getting them and getting a retrofit to upgraded HID projectors BUT... $$$ appears to be a lot !

By the time you are done you've spent, 200.00 for the housings, 400 for LED Projectors or 300 for HIDs and then either you do it and hope or you get it done... another 500 to 600... so the total is... 1100 to 1300 $$$, man that a lot for headlights !

Sneller, how is the output? Did you put HID bulbs in them, or stick with the halogen?

Post up pics!

Don’t get the Spyder halo headlights. They suck as is, and even worse when you put HID bulbs in them. The LEDs in them don’t last either.

I would know, I had them. If you want to do it right, bite the bullet and do a projector retrofit. It can be done for a third of what Scambler is saying.

If I were doing this on an 01+ truck, I'd probably still start with the Spyder housings, though. I like the one-piece look of them. They could certainly be done less cluttered, though.

The price is from the Spyder web site, just stating numbers.
My question would be, not being an a-hole, "Please tell me where" ? I want this mod, my stock headlight are getting worse and my Wife vehicle has better headlight output, I need t catch up.

I was thinking the clutter is taking on a more modern look... add, add, add, and then more LEDs.

bravetitan24,

Do you think the bay version are the same housings ? They certainly look VERY similar ?
I made a decision to keep my Ranger for a while more so another project is in order... or another project to add to the list !

Scrambler, if by “where” you mean where you can buy retrofitted housings or the components, check out The Retrofit Source. You can get the parts there to DIY, and I believe they will do the work for you for a price. There are also other companies out there that will do the work for you.

Personally, I bought a set from a member here on RF.

I see RetrofitSource will do the work for $600, labor, but if you want the HID Projectors thats another $140, and then you have to have the housings... $200... $940, and if you want LED Projectors, it another $250 on top of that so we are in it for over a grand... maybe but it is a lot f money !

You're quoting one company. Also, you can retrofit your stock housings, yourself. Its not that hard. You can buy a kit to do it yourself.

you can also try

I get ideas, put them aside, some call it procrastination but to me it is Thinking Time... LoL !
I come back to Mods more as needed than something I would like to do.
I am at a point where I need better lighting for the roads I travel and Projectors appear to be the best path but as always, I think way too much about things before acting.

Thanks for the Contacts and I will post results as they arrive.

Something else to consider: If you like the look of the one-piece housings over stock, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to buy the Spyder housings and then upgrade the projectors and lights.

I imagine it would be a pretty easy mod to do yourself since those housings are already cut for projectors. You'd just need to get some that are the same size.

I'd upgrade the little LEDs in the housings while you're in there as well. I had a few go out within the first year, just never got around to replacing them.

Exactly what I wanted to do but when I see the eBay Units that look exactly like the Spyder Units and for less money, I start to wonder WTF is going on !
I don't mind paying a fare price but if Spyder is just selling the same units for more money it isn't right in my book ! I now have to review all of the input on the Spyder Unit to make sure I'm not getting ripped off !

That I do not know, I am waiting for Mike to get back to me to see if he is still doing them and what it will cost !
I may need to check it out to see what is involved in the up grade.

What did you use to replace the LEDs in these units ?
Are they CREE LEDs or something special... mod'd in ?

Thanks for the ideas and info, appreciate it.

I never replaced the ones in my housings, just pointing out that I had issues with them and that it is something to keep in mind.

Ok... I read a How-To on one of the sites about checking the LEDs in the Sockets.
Access just under the gasket on the back, I would have to back and reread the H-To but it appeared to be easy access to at least check them... but if you can check them then you can replace them.

They also said they are just 12 volt LEDs that require wiring to a power source. Suggested attaching to parking lights but I was thinking DRLs !

I got one reply from HIDRetrofit.

Quote:
"Unfortunately the older Rangers here in the Philippines were not released so we dont have those Spyder headlights. I am sorry ! kind regards/

No luck there for a Retrofit to some Spyder Housings !

Also, I didn't see it on their Web Site but these guys are from the Philippines, I would like at least the Retrofit being done Stateside !

Here is a reply I got from ProTuningLabs, in reference to Spyder Housings and an HID Blub Retro.
Questions I asked !

NOV 27, 2017 | 03:23PM PST
Leslie W replied:
Hello

1) How do the High / Low beams work ?

This unit has separate low and high beams. Each function will work based on you what light you have on.

2) You ask for the Light color on the Low beams (I would chose the 6000K) but what about the High Beams, are they the same ?

High beams are normal halogens. HIDs are too bright on high beams and can cause additional heat in some headlight units. We do not install hids on high beams.

3) How much wiring is required after the initial plug-ins ?

This is straight plug and play for the main components of the headlights. Accessory lights such as Halos must be wired into your parking lights.

4) Is a “Warning Canceler” required for a 2003 Ranger and what does it do ?

A warning canceler is not needed most likely. This is only for vehicles that show a warning light after the HID is installed. It gets rid of that light on the dash. Most vehicles that need this are BMW, Mercedes, Audis, etc.

5) The "three LED Bulbs – Upper Inside corners – are they white in color and can they be wired for Daytime Running Lights, DRL’s ?

They are white colored and can be wired into different applications depending on how you want it to turn on. It is just a positive and negative stripped wire in the back. We recommend to wire it up with the Halo on the parking lights.

6) The you state HID Retrofit Kit… are we talking just the bulbs or new Projector Assemblies ?

Just the HID bulbs. Sometimes it requires the dust cover for some headlights and vehicles to be modified. We make the dust cover fit nicely without any big gaps so the wires can past through to the ballast.

Thank you,
