Screamin' Demon Coil Pack Review

Screamin' Demon Coil Pack Review
I got one of these to try from Wayne because I've had an impulse noise problem from my spark system that has been troubling my radios. I asked for one to experiment with, but I think I'm buying it after all.
Here's why:
1. Build Quality: it's excellent. Davis Unified Ignition makes some great stuff and this is no exception. He picked the right folks to make it. Bolts in with no stress -- perfect alignment. Wires snap in right and tight. Boots seal as they should to it.
2. Noise level: it's reduced, but not gone. Also, the "tone" of the noise is thinner, and more tolerable. Although it didn't eliminate it, it did improve the situation. Impulse noise is hard to measure as a "level" so I can't give "s-units" or anything, but it's reduced in volume and is more of a "tick" now and less like a "pop" -- if that makes any sense, lol.
3. Engine: my idle is smoother than it's been in ages. I have a 3.0 with the MAF mod and they do idle rough -- but this seems to improve it. That in itself is impressive.
4. Gas mileage: I seem to have a bit more gas mileage, about .5 to 1 mpg. I've been getting very repeatable numbers since I reflashed and run 93 octane, so this may be significant. It could also be nothing. I can't really give a very good report on this. You'll have to make your own evaluation.
5. Performance: well, I didn't expect it to do anything, but it FEELS like it actually did. One reason may be the Bosch Platinum Plus 4's I run. They have very big gaps and I think this coil drives them a lot better than the stock coil did. I have no objective measurements to offer here either.
But, taken as a whole, this coil IS an improvement over my stock coil. Whether that is because my old coil had an issue or not I can't tell you -- I don't have equipment to really measure a high voltage spark coils performance.
So, for the price it is, I don't think it's really much of a risk. It's a good piece manufactured by a solid company and sold by a good vendor.
My .02

About $100. I think you can find them on http://www.stuffforyourranger.com if I have the URL right. I was in a dialogue with Wayne about testing one and didn't order through the site so I'm not sure.

My main reason for trying it was to see if it helped my noise problem -- any performance benefit was gravy.

I have no idea, and no idea, lol. I haven't the equipment to measure that.
You need a calibrated scope with a high voltage probe to do it right since it's a decaying AC wave form. Ideally, you would check not just the voltage but the decay time as well.
A simple voltmeter won't tell you anything but one peak, or an average over a longer time than the spark lasts and isn't very useful.
I have a scope, but no compatible high voltage probe system for it.

so there will be no difference in the OEM coil pack, and the Screamin Demon!
With the plug wires, and plugs in good shape, and there is no misfire, there will be no performance improvement in aftermarket ignitions!!
#22
There have been many articles posted about how useless the aftermarket ignitions are (including coil packs). Not only that, but these aftermarket companies don't do any reliability testing at all, compared to Ford's requirements from their electronic component suppliers! The voltage produced by the coil will be clamped at the point the spark plug fires,
so there will be no difference in the OEM coil pack, and the Screamin Demon!

But you're correct about the Ford DIS: it's gotten the reputation of being one of the best factory ignition systems out there.

The difference in my case relates to the wide-gap Bosch Platinum +4 plugs. These plugs have gotten a bad rep in some circles and I think part of that is that many ignition systems don't fire them well enough. This may account for my noticing a difference.

at all!! Stay with Motorcraft double or fine wire platinum plugs and there
will not be a misfire problem.
The do, however, run well in my gas Mercedes!

Bob, I remember you from years ago on other forums, and you've always been a "shill" for FoMoCo products. I'm not impressed -- either then or now -- by your total partisanship on these things.
I'm surprised you even show up in any forums on mods -- you're predictable and we can always rely on you to say "you can't do it better than Ford already has". You're ridiculous, inaccurate half the time with your arguments, and get so emotional in simple fact based stuff that you destroy your own credibility.
For such a old timer at this, you are shocking in your inability to learn.
Nuff' said. Another Bob Ayer's Ford rant dealt with -- no need to take it further.
