New idea for Photography & Video

I was thinking of like a sticky, with a photo challenge in it, and users can post with their picture for the challenge.

Kind of like how www.DPchallenge.com is, but just a mini one in the section.

I'm all for it. We could even do themes, like a winter/snow theme or a macro theme. This would be a great item for Chrisitan's forum re-work w/ the forum sub-sections. Meaning there would be a sub-section for photo contests or even a sub-section just for submitting photos to the contest and another for voting.

Make sure they span at least a week or so. I sometimes don't have much time to shoot and process my images.. ..And well, I want to win!

Oh, and would the site be able/willing to furnish hosting space for this? Not everyone has their own hosting..

The ONLY problem I have with this is the fact that there are lots of "Profesional" photographers here and lots of "Amatures". I'd love to do this as I love photography, but my little 3.2mp Sony cant compare to a dSLR... what the heck I'd still play even if I didnt stand a chance.. lol

There are pros at this site? I don't know of any.. I know SwatCop is an aspiring pro, but to my knowledge he still earns his bread another way.

Really equipment doesn't matter that much, especially when making photos for the web. I would suggest one of the rules be that all submissions be limited to 1024 or 1280 in their largest proportion, including any finished borders, watermarks, etc. That's ~1.2 MP at best, making resolution significantly less important.

Thats why I put "Pro" in ""'s... I ment it in the sense of quite a few people that know what they are doing, not just point and shoot or change a couple settings and shoot. You know what I mean.

But yea if its limited... then it should be pretty equal.

Sample rules maybe? Additions/comments welcomed..
  • There will be a 1 (one) week period after a photo challenge subject is picked (by vote from the forum) and where photo submissions will be accepted.
  • All submissions must be resized to 1024 pixels on their largest proportion. Meaning the largest acceptable size would be a 1024x1024 pixel image. This includes any border, virtual frame, or watermarking/signature that is to be attached. Submitted photos may be in any shape.
  • All photos submitted MUST be your own work submitted by yourself. No submitting your friend's photo or using someone elses work as a basis for your own. Exceptions include patterns for borders or virtual frames and/or watermark logos, presuming you have the rights to use these patterns and logos.
  • Any and all photoshop 'tricks' will be permitted, including compositing of multiple shots and tweaking of color, levels, and sharpness of the photo.
  • All submitted photos remain the property of the original artist/poster unless they specifically give permission for it's use outside of this contest. However applicants release the board and/or challenge moderators to re-post and/or copy the image to another host within the context of this contest.
  • A thread will be created for submissions. To submit a photo users will make a post to this thread w/ their photo and possibly a short explination. Once submitted they are free to remove the photo and re-submit a new one or a re-edit of the photo until the close of the submission stage. Once the submission stage is completed no new edits/photos will be accepted.
  • Each user may submit at most 1 (one) photo per challange.
  • After the 1 week sumission period, a new thread/poll will be created w/ each of the submitted photos, in order of submission in one or more posts. At this point the thread poll will be open for voting from all registered R-F.com members. Voting will run for X days, then the photo w/ the most votes will be declared the winner of this challange. Users that enter a photo will be permitted a single vote in the challange, just like every other R-F.com member.
  • Multiple challanges may be run in parallel. Example: Challange A could be in submission stage while topics for challange B are discussed. Later when challange A is in the voting stage challange B will be opened for submissions. However no two challanges will be open for submission at the same time.
  • Submissions that fail to meet these rules will not be eligible for the challenge and will not be added to the voting thread by the challange administrator(s).

Thoughts?!

See I see this as a great possiblitity to learn and improve.. for everyone. A great eye for photography is not bought w/ an expensive or fancy camera or software package. I could easily see a winning photo from something like this coming from a ~3 MP 'consumer' camera.

Also I see this as a great way to teach each other new tricks. Maybe after the challange is over the winner could write a short writeup on how they shot and/or post-processed the image. Call it a mini, photographic HowTo of sorts.. This way everyone learns the 'tricks' the winner used..

Well, if there's no interest, then it isn't worth doing. I'd volunteer to do what I can to administrate it, although I'd need some help from a mod.

Maybe we need a show of hands as to how many members would actually be interested in participating..

Good point. See this is why we need to do this so people like me can learn.

I'll play.

sounds like fun. i was thinking tho.. with this being a ranger site, should the photos have something to do with the trucks?? or, would they be open to anything, sort of like going with a theme like you had mentioned.

wow, i never thought anyone would go for my idea. lol...

Colin, it seems like you know what you're doing and it's exactly how i imagined it.

As for the theme, i was thinking it could be anything, one week it might just be the trucks.

Yeah, I would rather we went beyond trucks every now and then. Certianly the truck could easily be the subject for many such shots. As an example if the theme were macros you could snap some macros of parts of the truck. The rear-view mirror would make a great subject for a 'reflections' challenge. Maybe even the finish of the truck itself if you have it sufficiently waxed. And the posibility of a truck only challange now and then wouldn't be unreasonable. Maybe even expanding beyond that, like a wheels challange, or dash illumination challange. There are tons of posiblities here!

But quite frankly there are periods of the year where some of us don't keep our trucks clean and don't feel like shooting it. Also variety is the spice of life, it might be nice to change things up every now and then.

So what's the concensus on the sample rules I drafted up? Any comments on them? I did a tiny amount of reading around and they seem to be vaugely inline w/ what other sites do..

Is that an option oh great mods?

I'm kinda confused here but if i actually saw it i probably wouldnt be...

We should have somewhere to submit the photo's so that other people don't see them until the challenge ends. On the last day of the challenge they should all be posted on the same thread with a poll.

No truck photo's! I don't haveth a truck! Just kidding, I just couldn't participate.

I change my mind, someone PM'ed me asking if I liked this idea, and I said no. Thinking about how people react to someone else's modification tey don't like, or how the truck of the month used to be run on another site, people get all pissy and stupid about not winning, but I DO believe we have a higher caliber of people here on this site, and I would definately be in.

Now, here is my question. Would this be run like DPChallenge, and in the timespan of the challenge, you have to take the shot, or can you use a picture from ANY shooting and time?

I have had many-a-shots that I wanted to submit to DPC, but they were 'old' shots, and they check the dates.

I do like this idea, and it would be a great learning tool for all.

Hmm I might just have to try my hand at all of this. What forum is this going to be in?

Look above and it tells you. There is a new section in the off-topic forum.

i agree with him that you should be able to use photos from anytime because sometimes you may not be able to get out that week and take some really good pics.

I too agree that you should be able to use shots from whenever, presuming of course that YOU TOOK THE PHOTO! And by that I mean the full photo. 'Photoshopping' up a marketing photo for a product (like a car or truck) does NOT count in my opinion. That could be another challange (ie the "photoshopping challange") but it is not photography in my opinion.

The problem w/ having private, unseen submissions is that means we need a moderator to handle this. Unless we could/would have someone volunteer to receive non-site email w/ the photos.. But then hosting becomes an issue! I dunno, I'm just not sure how that could work. My thought was that people would just make posts to a 'submit your photos here' thread..
