um if this is what your taking about...
then yeah. It has been done quite a bit around here (RF).
There are two bolts that are located just above the HVAC controls that you have to remove. From there the plate just pops off.
I actually did the bezel, the cup holders, and the part of the door panel where the handle is. in the pics the blue looks kinda fruity but it is a lot more subdued in person. I like it and with a couple coats of clear there should be no wear issues. As you can see i didn't clear them and i can see some to the light fingernail marks around the handles but nothing that can't be rubbed out.
if you want more info you can go look through the interior forums and there should be plenty of info.

What you could do though is either take a picture or write down what each of the buttons do, spray the faceplace your color, then go to a local sticker/vinyl place and have them make you stickers for the buttons. Or you could do the same thing except cover the current lettering with the stickers or whatnot, paint, peel them off, then clear it. That way the buttons would still have Illumination.

well if you're painting over a factory black face all you're gonna do is candy coat it...it will just give it a different color tint showing up on top of the black..

i just picked up some metal speck (not Flake) auto paint in an arosal can from NAPA. Two cans of that and three cans of a fair quality clear (which will go on when i get the time pull everything back off). That should do ya.
