So I posted this thread in the 4.0 thread's but did not get much traffic. And I coul not figure out how to move it. So I'll just re-do it here.
I have an 87' with the 2.9 EFI and a 5spd man trans. I want to find a newer ranger that has been thrashed and put the motor, trans and transfer in my 87. Has anyone done this yet? I know a lot of people swap to a 5.0, but i need the mpg since it is my daily driver too lol.

 

idk how it would work but i know there will have to be some fab.
After my old 3.0 blew i had a doner 4.0 but my mecanic said that it would be a lot more money than what i was lookin to spend but im sure it could work

 

isn't 4.0L the same as a 2.9L but with more bore/stroke?

 

ya you can definitely do it. Go over to therangerstation.com and go into the tech section and there is a 4.0 swap build section and itll tell you how to do it and what to look for. Im about to swap one in for my 2.3 once my new barn is done. not to costly of a swap either. I hear to find a donor ranger and swap everything over. but its all there at therangerstation.com I hope i was a help.

 

Cash for Clunkers may have taken away a lot of the good donor 4.0s that were otherwise body trashed. Have you looked into upgrading? You have an '87, so it's not a spring chicken anymore. I gave up my '92 for my current Ranger, going from a manual 2.3 to the auto 4.0.

 

that is crappy. all those good 4.0Ls gone all in the name of CFC.
