I tend to be long-winded, so I'm going to try and keep it simple so that you guys can voice your opinions "by the numbers." I'm a recent college graduate who is looking to buy a small truck (obviously a Ranger.) I just went to the dealership today and looked over the truck and it all sounds good to me, but it never hurts to have some additional (and expert, I might add) opinions. So, you can find info/pics of the Ranger here and the rest of the deal outlined below.

Trade-in:
2000 Dodge Durango 4x4
4.7L V8 Magnum
95,000 miles

Purchase:
2000 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4
Extended cab (4-door)
4.0L V6
77,000 miles

Basically the deal breaks down like this: $8,650 for the Ranger, minus $3,000 for my trade-in, plus tax, tags, title, etc....Bottom line is $6,512 out the door.

Good deal? Bad deal?

NADA Retail Value: $8,225

P.S.- A couple questions about the Ranger. First, when you try to unlock the doors with the key, it sticks for the first couples tries, but works after that. Of course, he says this is common with Fords but is this a cause for concern? Second, the dome light is missing the cover, who know why, but are those things relatively easy to get ahold of and replace?

first of all welcome to R-F....now on to your questions...yes it sounds like a great deal...the door lock just spray some silicone grease it there and problem solved...dome light cover is very easy to find and replace...tell the dealer you want that stuff done before you get the truck and if they refuse then walk...the dealer should fix that stuff before you buy it

One more question

Thanks! Hopefully I'll buy the truck and end up sticking around. I already have plans for it. Haha. Anyways, one more question.

I noticed that the 4WD in the Ranger is just a **** on the dash? I've had a Chevy Blazer (push button) and a Dodge Durango (manual shifter for the 4WD) and for some reason the Chevy's push button and the Ranger's dial/**** just make me slightly uncomfortable. Living in Florida, the 4x4 isn't a huge deal, but it would be nice to know that if I wanna drive on the beach or in the mud it will work.

I guess my question is, has anyone ever had any trouble with this type of selector for their four-wheel?

you have nothing to worry about with the electronic 4x4...since you live in florida and dont need it a lot...engage 4wd hi and low at least once a month to make sure it shifts and engages ok

deal sounds good, finding one with under 100k in that gen can be hard. as said the parts are easy finds and the door lock is a 30sec fix. i agree make the dealer do it. also make the provide a carfax. nothing like peice of mind.

Well you guys are either crazy or I am. I think he's taking advantage of you. Don't get me wrong it looks like a real nice truck but its the numbers that bothers me. Basically you have a 1000-1200 dollar difference in value and he's charging you 6500 for it. Ok he has to make money he's in business but he's making 5000-5300 on the deal or basically your giving him your durango free and paying the highest book price for the Ranger. IMO a good deal would be you paying 2000-2500 difference if your durango is nice.
Durango Book Price 2925-5430
Ranger Book Price3950-6655
