New guy saying hi
Hello,
I've got a 2001 Supercab 3.0 with about 153k on it. I'm amazed at how reliable this vehicle has been. Other than putting gas in it and changing the oil and air filters the only maintenance I've done is replacing the tires about 15k ago and the clutch about 1k ago. Somehow the brakes are still from the factory (though they are next to be swapped out).
Occasionally I hear a rattling sound at low rpm. I can't tell if it is indeed a rattling or engine knock. Also, I hear a loud clunking noise from the driver's side of the engine bay when the climate control is set to anything other than off or vent. This sound is accompanied by a loss in power. Where should I start looking for answers to these problems?
I'm glad to be part of this forum!

Yes, you are hearing engine pinging. A lot of 3.0's do it without high mileage. It has a lot of causes from bad plugs to carbon buildup to timing problems.
And the clunk is the A/C compressor. You have correctly identified the only two positions the compressor does not run in. It doesn't run below a certain intake temperature either as the system assumes it not needed to dehumidify the air coming in.
I had a 2001 and it did it worse than my 2002 I have now (I wrecked the 2001 after one year owning it) so they made it a bit better but many have reported it and it's not a problem.
Oh...and welcome!
