Intriduction and some questions

Hi guys, been lurking for a while now but since I pulled the trigger a few weeks ago I suppose it is about time I said “Hi”.

So a bit of background: Been looking for about a year for a vehicle with towing capabilities. Reason being that I have a Harley FXDB and a Kawi Ninja 650. Yeah, I need a toy hauler. Especially since a buddy of mine and I plan on doing some track days this year.

With my previous experience on buying used vehicles I decided to buy new. I made a list of capable vehicles within by budget and the Ranger and the Rav4 where my top picks. The plan was to get over the phone prices first and then walk in prices on the two with dealers closest to me. Well, the second walk in for the Ranger had me sold with 5k off sticker price (besides the Ranger is ultimately what I wanted). Monthly payment and gas included, financially it was the right choice over the Rav4.

I have made good friends with the search on this site but need you Ranger guru’s input.

1. I am unable to find a locking gas cap for a 2011. Is there another year that will work for what I have? Ford dealer along with some auto shops are saying no locking cap is available yet. Maybe just wait it out?

2. I understand there is a uhh flaw…with the locking mechanism on our doors. I know I can just get an alarm but I would feel better if a thief can’t open my door with just a push of a button. Is there something I can do so it isn’t so accessible?

I know if someone wants to break in…they are going to, but if I can keep the honest people honest and convince a thief to move on to an easier target, I would have a better piece of mind when my truck is out of sight.

I'd bet any year locking gas cap back to 93 will work lol. There's no "push of a button" flaw with our rangers to open the door. If you're not mechanically inclined you could just take a tiny bit of JBWeld at plug the two holes below the door. Obviously a tiny bit, you don't want to jbweld the lock in your door haha.

Welcome to RF!

First off if you havent figured it out yet Rangers are pretty much all the same since 93. Anyways Im sure you could find a locking gas cap Im pretty sure my 99 had one when i got it. So just look look for a gas cap for any 93 + ranger and that should help your search.

Second the "flaw" has been tackled by a couple people. Its been awhile since I saw the thread on here talking about it but the general idea is to put a plate in to block any tampering. This would require you to take apart the door a bit but well worth it if your concerned.

Thanks guys. I figured that would be the case with the gas cap but wanted to be sure before I start spending money.

As far as the door lock, I am going to test it out myself tonight. If I need to make an adjustment, I certainly dont mind taking the door apart and putting a plate up.
