Got a free '92!
Hello everyone.
I recently aquired a '92 regular cab long box 2WD with the 3.0/5-speed combo from a neighbor.
He's had it since the mid '90s but only used it to haul stuff to the dump for the last few years and last fall some ne'er-do-well stole the catalytic converter. He didn't want to deal with repairing the exhaust and offered it to me in exchange for disposing of the junk that was in the bed.
I originally planned to repair the exhaust and resell the truck but my teenage daughter decided she wanted it and I told her that could happen if she helped me with the needed repairs and maintenance. Obviously, she also needs to learn how to drive a stick so we've been working on that as well.
We took care of the exhaust with a 2 1/2" universal cat welded to the end of the stock Y-pipe followed by a 2 1/4" exhaust system built from leftovers I had including a Magnaflow muffler and a Fox Mustang LX tail pipe.
The coolant and brake fluid looked pretty old so those got flushed and the hard brake lines on the axle looked a bit crusty so we bent up some new ones.
We get long, nasty winters in Northern Alberta. I found a good deal on a set of 16" New-Edge era Mustang wheels wrapped in Michelin X-Ice rubber and figured it would be worth installing longer wheel studs and spacers to get them to fit properly.
I wanted her to have daytime running lights and had an old set of universal projector style fog lights on the shelf. I built a bracket to install them in the bumper openings and we wired them to come on with ignition power.
On the mechanical to-do-list yet is plugs/wires/cap and rotor, serpentine belt, replacing the leaky rubber shifter turret plugs, fresh ATF and fixing the intermittently functioning fuel gauge.
My daughter has a slightly longer wish list that includes a modern stereo and eventually rust repair and paint. She calls the truck "cookie monster" and is quite enthusiastic about it.
