97 Ranger- Trans Problem

97 Ranger- Intermittant downshifting banging
I've got 97 Ranger 4.0 w/auto trans and 4x4.The problem I'm having is an intermittant banging when the truck downshifts into 1st gear when coming to a stop and when upshifting from 1st to 2nd.But it doesn't do it all the time.I might drive the truck for an hour or more with no problems ,then bang as it downshifts when I come to a stop.It will then keep doing it until I shut the truck off.Once I restart it, it may, or may not start with the banging. The fact that it does this intermittantly is what's puzzling me.The truck has 137k on it ,but is in great shape other than the downshift problem.I've been told it may be a seal, that as it deteriorates will cause a fluctuation in pressure in the trans.I'm trying to see if anyone else has experienced this, and what the cure was. Thanks for any help you can give me.
