Starting issue
Hi All,
I have a 2007 Ford Ranger Thunder 3.0L 4x4.
I have starting issues in that the truck cranks over but will not start but if I spray quick start into the air filter the truck will start and run quite happily.
Any ideas for me to look at. I am reluctant to replace the fuel pump yet as the truck will run once started.
Thanks for your help and suggestions

Welcome to the forum
It reads like you are losing fuel pressure when engine is off
Fuel pressure should hold in the system/injector rail for months at a time
Try this test
Cycle key on for 2 seconds then off, repeat 3 times, THEN try to start the engine
Each time key is turned on the Computer will run the fuel pump for 2 seconds, but ONLY 2 seconds, its a safety thing
2 seconds adds about 10psi pressure, your 2007 runs at 55psi pressure
So cycling key 3 times should give you about 30psi which is enough to start
Unless your MPG has gone to hell the most likely cause of 0 pressure is the fuel pump's check valve, it should close and prevent fuel and pressure from flowing back into the gas tank
Its not a separate part it is IN the fuel pump

Yes, fuel pump is an electric motor, so its failure point is starting, once started they usually won't shut off, i.e. fuel pumps usually won't strand you at the side of the road, it can just very unusual, they will strand you in a parking lot, lol, because they won't "start up" again when they fail
You can replace the Fuel Pump relay first, or swap it with another relay in the engine fuse box, like washer or wiper relay if they are the same
The vibration of the engine running and the now FULL TIME 14.5volts(not 12volts anymore) can get failing pump to start working
When engine is off system voltage is 12volts
When engine is running alternator is working so its now 14.5volts, and that can matter to electric motors
This is all just guess work until actual problem is found

Hi,
I have been away and now i am home i can definitely say the fuel pump does not run when the electrics are turned on. Trying to find the relays seems to be a nightmare. The fuse box is a miniature one below the steering wheel but contains no relays only fuse. Down in the foot-well there there is a panel with what looks like 4 relays. Other relays seem to be under the steering column and spread around the engine bay.
Has anyone any idea or a photo of the location of the fuel pump relay.
Thanks again for your help.
