1995 to 1997 Rangers use VSS(vehicle speed sensor) located on the drivers side of transmissions tail shaft
Unplug VSS wire connector
Remove the one bolt and pull out the DRIVEN gear with the VSS
Inspect the gear for damage
If you look in the hole you can see the Worm gear on the tail shaft, the DRIVE gear, it is possible for it to be damaged but less likely
IF driven gear and worm gear looks OK, replace VSS
The DRIVEN gear's number of teeth, is used to calibrate speedometer to "true speed" so it can be changed if you change tire size or rear axle ratio
