sparks and fire after shutting off

Well tonight i had an exciting experience. I move the truck to infront of the shed so i could load a few things up and when i shut it off there was a noise coming from under the truck. It was like a spinning noise. Well i got out and it kept going so i tryed to start the truck back up and it wouldnt start. I got out and got to looking and there were sparks and an orange glow coming from the starter. I grab a pair of pliers and popped the hood and undid the battery. which stopped the spinning noise and the sparks. i waited a few minutes and hooked the battery back up and the truck started up and ran just fine. I drove it around the yard moving some stuff and didnt have any more problems. I was just wondering what could have caused this and is there anything that i need to check on or replace?

Sounds like a short circuit. Wires touched, solenoid broke down and had constant feed of power. Rare but happens

I would probably replace the starter, last thing you want is for it to happen again when your not there and its sitting next to your house or worse, inside you garage and catch fire..

starter AND solenoid. usually they come as one unit but they can be separated. So just do both and be safe

ALSO: when you have the starter off look, look into the bellhousing of the tranny and look to see if the fly wheel teeth are in good shape. Starter teeth are designed to break away before fly wheel teeth do but just to be sure id visually inspect

Sounds like the starter was stuck on the on position/solenoid.

Might be worth replacing both.
