Do you have to remove the gas tank? Can't you just remove the straps holding it up and brace it in place until the new frame section goes in?

Did you have to weld anything to rehang the exhaust?

I've read elsewhere that when you drop the driveline, you should mark it so you can put it back together aligned same way. Why is this, and how did you keep track when replacing the rear end with another?

When Bolting the frame back together, did you use grade 8 hardware? what size bolts and did you have to drill out the holes to make them fit?

Thanks again!
Hi , you will have to remove the tank , as long as its not full of gas it takes about 10 minutes and is easy as pie with the bed removed . No welding involved . You can use a tube of touch up paint and mark the flanges front and rear where the driveshaft meets so when you install it you can put it back the same way . As long as the flanges are clean , smooth and rust and debris free , this is a non issue . I unbolted the leaf springs from the frame and left everything right where it was , the rear end was supported on jack stands so when I installed the new frame everything was still in place .

After I re-bolted the springs in place , then I swapped out the rear end .

I did use grade 8 hardware , I believe 7/16" coarse thread x 1 1/2" Long , I used flat washers both sides and lock washers on the nut side . The frame sections are channeled and fit tightly , the bolts just hold them together , torque the bolts sufficiently so they are good and tight . Hope this helps , let me know if you have anymore questions .

Hullo!

I will be doing this exact same thing on a 2000 Ranger this Spring.
Any recommendation’s on places to buy the rear frame would be great!

This is where I got mine , they had a bunch of them and were all like brand new . If your in Middleton MA , will take you an hour to and hour and a half to get there . Frame section will easily fit in the bed of a full size pick up . Hope this helps you . Regards , Jody

I am really interested in this thread. Are the hosted images gone now? When I click on a thumbnail I get a black screen. If I've necro'd a 4 year old thread I apologise. I'm a new user to this forum, but not a new user to the internet =).

Thanks.

Weird, I would think the thumbnails would be gone too, if it were a hosting issue. But replacing the rear frame isn't rocket science, did mine last winter, everything is holding up great.

Grade 8 bolts for rear frame replacement

Hi-I’m replacing my rear frame rails on my 2005 Ford Ranger. I’m wondering if anyone knows how many grade 8 bolts I need TOTAL?? I know they’re half-inch .. it looks like I need at least 16. I also know I need smaller grade 8 bolts & a larger size for the overlap. & smaller than 1/2” for the brackets for the leaf springs. So if there’s anyone that can tell me how many grade 8 bolts I need and the sizes to replace the rear frame rails & leaf springs I would Greatly appreciate it. Thx!!

Grade 8 bolts

I used 16@ .5” x 1.5” grade 8 for the frame section and crossmember and front leaf-spring hangers.
8@ .5” x 1.5” grade 8 for rear leafspring hangers

frame compatibility

Hello all.

I have a 2000 Ranger with a 6 foot bed, I am looking to replace the rotted rear half of the frame. Can I use the rear frame half from a 2011? Both trucks are 4wd supercabs if that matters.

The thread started with "98 - 2006 seem to take the same frames" so I want to know for sure if the 2011 will work and if not, why?

Thanks

Rear frame experience step one

Made my pilgrimage to Allied Auto up in Weare nh. Probably a trip every Ranger owner in the northeast will need to take eventually. Took two hours to drill out and remove all the old rivets from the salvage frame section. If Ford only used same material on the frame as they did the rivets we wouldn’t even need this thread smh
