Power windows & mirrors not working - clicking sound

Have a 2001 XLT extended cab w/ 3.0 V6 RWD. The power windows and power mirrors have stopped working. When I press the window or mirror switches, I get a continuous clicking sound from under the dash (I am assuming this is coming from one relay's under the dash). The clicking stops if I hold any of the buttons down for a second. Both the master window control switch (driver's side) and right window switch (passenger's side) are not working.

The power door locks are fully operational as are all the other interior electronics (windshield wipers, lights, radio, etc.).

If I press the power mirrors switch the clicking noise will start. I can stop the clicking noise by pressing and holding the power window switch on the passenger side.

I can start the clicking noise by pressing any controls for the power window or power mirrors and the stop the clicking noise by holding any of the controls down. So I am assuming there is some common relay or connection in this system that is damaged.

I have been reviewing the wiring diagrams and can not find an obviously commonality between the power windows and power mirrors systems. Any pointers on how to diagnose this problem?

Thanks.

PLEASE someone help with this I have the same problem with my power window switch. I can get the passenger side window down and up but I can't get the drivers window down even though it worked 4 days ago.

When hit the switch I also hear a secondary clicking noise coming from somewhere under the dash.

Is this maybe a relay or wiring harness problem?

I appreciate you calling attention to this issue but I believe our issues are unrelated. You most likely have a problem with the mechanical components. My issue is solely within the electrical system; probably a bad relay or ground.

Thanks.

Well that is the most help I've gotten on the problem so far... so you think its the motor or regulator?

If your window is not rolling down and l you get is a rapid clicking it's probably an issue with the gearing in the window in either the motor cog or the regulator. I have a bad regulator that will be replaced this weekend. Generally the teeth break off the regulator.

if you turn your truck off in a quiet area and not open the doors and press the window down or up button you hear the relay cycle on and then off. So yes...if this relay is firing like crazy and the window is not moving then you have a bad relay..?

My probably is definitely not an issue with the mechanic components of the power windows. Pressing the power mirror switch causes one of the relay's under the dash to go crazy (I believe it's the one touch relay).

This weekend I tested all the switches with the instructions found in the Ford Wiring Diagrams manual (http://www.evchargernews.com/miscfil...%20Diagram.pdf). The master window control switch, the right window switch and the exterior rear view mirror switch all passed.

Another little piece of information, if I press any of the buttons on the power windows or power mirrors switches, I get a continuous clicking noise. I noticed that if I open the driver side door the door ajar switch does not work. The interior lights do not come on and the door ajar light on the dashboard does not turn on. If I hold down on of the buttons the clicking stops (while the drivers door is open) and the door ajar light comes on and the interior lights turn on. This does not happen with the passenger side door.

Fixed. The ground wire running between the door and the body was broke. Took me forever to find but a very easy fix.

had the same trouble. It was indeed a bad ground. Behind the driver's kick panel next to the E-brake. Exacerbated by salty Minnesota roads.
