No 4 Low dash light, Is it in 4 Low?

I am buying a 98 Ranger XLT Extended cab and the 4 Low dash light does not come on. The 4 high does come on. I will take it in to a mechanic for a pre purchase check, but wonder if that is a major warning or i fit might explain the Check Engine light? Should I buy or just say no?

Depends, was the truck parked and in neutral when you were switching it into 4lo. If it was and the light still wasn't coming on the light could be out or the transfer case shifting motor could be out.

Try putting the truck in 4 Lo and turning while backing up.

If it sounds like things are binding up a some then it is in 4 lo.

Easy to pull the dash and change the bulb, just to see, hardest part is getting the new bulb and the time to do it !

to put the Truck in 4x4 Low Range, the Truck needs to be running with your foot on the brake and the gearshift in Neutral (if automatic) or clutch depressed if a manual.
