lol, but don't the HID kits themselves tend to over heat and melt the housing on some lights anyway? isn't that why they're illegal? i thought it was either because of that, or because people usually have their lights aimed wrong afterwards, and blind a lot of people.. is it because of either reason?

They aren't neccessarily illegal for you to install and use unless your state's motor vehicle laws mirror FMVSS-318 codes. There aren't that many doing this. If it doesn't, the only time you might have a problem is if you go to inspection. In most cases, you can't be pulled over and given a ticket unless they are too bright in on-coming traffic or so off-color that they actually look blue.

Anyways, they're illegal because they are too damn bright and causes a GLARE that is not only annoying, but dangerous for other drivers.
HIDs will NOT melt your headlight housing, becuase HID bulbs run at a lower wattage. They are actually more efficient than halogen bulbs.
IT'S ILLEGAL!

If you can show me something to the contrary, I'm all ears and would love to read to read.

justy because they run at a lower wattage doesnt mean they wont melt the housing. my friend has a maxima and his housing was warped from running aftermarket HID's. . . they use less power, are more efficient, but run really hot. def. worth taking a risk with the law. he had them on next to my friends silverstars and my super white PIAAS and but look a dull yellow.

Yes, they are illegal. Wether or not you'll get in trouble for them really depends where you live. I've had a couple cops already ask me to turn my brights off...and after informing them that I dont have brights, they're just on, they actually complimented me on them. I haven't had any trouble whatsoever with overheating, wires melting, anything like that. The kit is plug-n-play and wont damage any of your existing hardware. They do run warm, but they're about 15W lower than the standard hallogen. One thing that's really nice about them is the color itself. It's pure white light, no more yellow. In reference to the DOT approval..the lights themselves are DOT approved, however the only lights that are for your vehicle are the ones that came on it stock.

Now, this doesn't mean that you can't get in trouble for having the lights blinding on-coming traffic.
From searching around the net, there are come HID kits that comply with all DOT standards. From what I've seen, they include a complete new headlight assembly and wiring harness. It's not a replacement for the existing bulb. It complies because it was designed to comply, not simply plug-n-play replace the bulb.
