Welcome to the forum
Bienvenue sur le forum
(from an online app my French is awful)
2006 Ranger will have a 5R55E(4.0l) or 5R44E(3.0l or 2.3l) automatic
In a 4x4 automatic the pan is deeper so may need an extra 1/2 quart
Totally dry they use 10 quarts(or 10.5), but........................you can't drain torque converter which can hold 3 quarts if not a bit more
Most of the time if you drop the pan and drain ATF you will only get 5 quarts out, so will only need to refill 5 or 6 quarts, the rest is in the torque converter, valve body, pump and transcooler
So you don't need 10 quarts
MERCON V Automatic Transmission Fluid is Ford spec, you can use any brand that says Mercon V compatible
Transfer case holds about 1.25 quarts(2.5 pints) bone dry, so maybe 1 quart on refill
Yes, pretty much any multi-purpose ATF will work in transfer case
Ford specs, MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid
As for Castrol ATF + 4 I see this "You may use ATF +4 in most applications that call for older Dexron and Mercon fluids" so yes you can use it in the transfer case

Super RonD,
Fryday i will go shopping and stop at Canadian Tire for some Mercon V ,compatible oil ....i think they have Valvoline in the brands they are selling and it is good quality.
i still have these Castrol ATF4 that i used ,if i remember correctly,in my Colorado so i will use it here in my Ranger.
i really appreciated your answer,it so confusing on the internet and that is one of the reason i joined the Group here,,to have good and right informations.
Thanks again
Merci

well
i just changed the oil,
it was so black,,,
so full of carbone think!
i never seen an automatic transmission oil (in a transfercase) so black in my years!
i think it was the OEM of the truck,it has 187,000 or 190000 km ,,i dont remember.
i changed it for the Castrol,
i wonder how it will engage and disengage now but it was slow before but it was working
now what i have left is the transmission fuid
