OOOO finally something i can answer and know what im talking about lol...
The only way a factory six disk would work in a mustang is if it came out of a Mustang. The Mustangs have a different radio mounting system than the Ranger and most Explorers do. Here is what i mean...
Mustang Radio...

Ranger/Explorer radio

I also wouldn't doubt the wire harness are different.
And as for the first question... will a 6 disk work in a 97 Explorer Sport... probably not... From everything i've heard ford changed the wiring/harness in 98... so anything newer than that probably won't work in an older Explorer or Ranger for that matter. I wanted to do install a newer stock radio in my 96 Ranger, but hearing about the harness changing kept me away from doing so.
Hope this helped guys....

All 98-04 Ranger Radios will work in all 04 or older Sport Tracs, except for Ranger Tremor Radios, and Sport Trac Adrenalines, which have proprietary radios.
Edit.. 97 Sport, not Sport Trac.. Hmm.. not 100% sure. I'll see if I can find the specs on a 97 Explorer to see which style harness it uses.

Even when ordering radios for very applications, I still double-check the part number, because I never know what kind of oddball misbuild I might find, esp. early in the model year!

So, if you have the 16-pin on the 97 Ex, the late HU could be plug and play.
If you have the two 8-pins on the Ex harness, the late HU would not be plug and play in the 97. In that case, you should be able to install it by either splicing the late 16-pin plug into the Ex harness or possibly by using an adapter patch harness if one is available for that swap.
