Anyone did this mod?

My truck's headlight mod....
Ok. Forgive me for rambling. I bought the 92 Ranger last weekend. After dark hits I realize there are no park/tail , dash lights and the overkill ProComp gauges aren't lit either. The headlights come on if you pull the switch all the way out but no other lights do. However, if you pull the switch to a point in between the "park light" and "all lights" the headlights go off and all interior lights work as well as the park lights and lights on the windshield visor.

There are two switches that light up green also that I'm guessing used to turn on grill gaurd mounted driving lights that aren't there anymore.

Anyone have any thoughts on this or did this before??

Also i removed a cool blue 9004 headlight bulb to replace with a 9004 Silverstar and can't get it in to save my life. It may be my imagination but they looked notched slightly different. Both lights have "9004" on the side of the socket though.

Did the previous owner screw with the wiring at all? If so you may have a bigger problem at hand then you think. I am no wire expert but to me it sounds like it could just be a bad switch.

im almost 100% sure the 92 rangers take a 9007 headlight bulb.

i have no idea what "mod" you are talking about..

it sounds like your headlight switch is bad, you can call ford and order a replacement.

92 and earlier Ranger H/L switches are famous for erratic behavior when they get old. Chances are good that you need a new one.

lol ! I'm a dumbass. Why that didn't occur to me I've no excuse for..... especially since i'm usually a doom and gloomer.

Thanks folks. Appreciate the responses.

Now I just need to figure out why the 9004 Silverstar won't fit in the plug that the 9004 blue came out of.... =\ I better double check that too with the way my mind is this week...

if they are the cheap bulbs that you can get off ebay, who knows, they could be labeled wrong.

i think we just put 9007's in my brothers 92 ranger, take the bulbs back and look it up in the little booklet they have.

9004's are normally in cars.

Since i've no idea where the original bulbs came from it's possible they are from eBay. All the auto parts store's list the 9004 as being for a 92 down though. 93 up uses the 2007 from what I've seen so far.

I will have to look for a headlight switch though and prefer dealer stock. Thanks for the input !

I got an Echlin switch from NAPA. Installed it and the same results except harder to find the "spot" where the park lights come on. I put the old switch back in and wiggled the switch shaft and can get headlights and park lights by holding it a certain way. A bad plug or wire connection in the harness maybe? I may pick up the whole assembly from a local wrecking yard if they have one on hand.

Anyone know how hard it is just to wire 2 switches-one for park lights and one for headlights ? I imagine the dimmer switch may be an issue but would like some thoughts if it's possible. Thanks
