97 batt. light intermittent

noticed my battery light came on today then went off, got home and shut truck down, waited few mins and then started up again and light stayed on....then went off after another restart. is this light just a voltage light? if charging voltage is lost, the light illuminates? also is there any way the starting system could intertwine with this issue? i'm figuring it's just a bad alternator, but figured i'd post on here for any input. trucks a 4 cyl.

an easy way to check your alternator, is with the truck running hook up a voltmeter to the battery, and you should get around 14.5 volts. and if the battery terminals need to be cleaned, I would do that as well.

Did that and voltage was ok as u said at 14.5 but haven't been able to do this yet while light is on. Also all connections are tight on starter, batt, and alt.

if you have a bad diode in the alternator that light will come on too.also if the alternator isnt putting out enough amps.i have seen many times where the alternator will out out 14.5 volts but put out like nothing for amps.id take it somewhere and have the alternator tested.
