94 "sometimes" won't start
I have a '94 XLT 4.0 V six with a manual 5 speed transmission, for some reason, I think a 4 speed trans. was installed but this is not the problem I need help with but if anyone knows of ID markings on the trans that will tell me if it is a 4 or 5 speed that would be helpful. On to my starting problems
There is never a problem with the first start of the day or any start up when the truck sits for more than a couple of hours. Although if I try to make multiple stops say on my way home from work or just multiple errands through out the day sooner or later it just will refuse to start. It has a real strong crank but just will not catch. It has also cut out on me twice now while driving, on one occasion I was able to pop it into neutral, turn the key off and start it back up on the fly. Some mechanics "guess" it could be a fuel issue. The check engine light does not come on and stay on so it is not throwing a code. I am trying to avoid a $100.00 diagnostic charge from my local Ford dealer if possible. Has anyone any ideas a "back yard" mechanic might try prior to sinking a ton of $$ into it ......... I like my truck and would like to keep it but I just can not continue to wonder if it's gonna get me home or to my next destination without a problem. I really need some experienced / professional input 'cause I've pretty much stopped driving it and I'd really like to get back behind the wheel again. .......... please help

I've had the Ranger about six months and have not changed the fuel filter ............ this sounds like an inexpensive and fairly easily done minor maintenance procedure and a very good suggestion. I will follow up on it as soon as I am able. I appreciate the input and will post whether or not it is successful. Thanks, Rick
