86, 2.3 sohc. No fuel pressure at rail, since installing new filter.

helli, and thanks for any help. to start, truck would start right up, cold 10/10 times. issue was with stalling and power loss, i could be driving just fine and them start sputtering and backfiring as well as power loss and even stalling at lights. I figured i would change the fuel filter. for my truck, it has the canister type filter housing with a filter inside. I changed the filter, and after that couldnt get the truck to start. noticed i was sucking air thru the filter housing, due to bad thread and o rings. was gonna buy a new one but just jb welded it together. getting fuel to pass, and pump now but no fuel is going to the fuel rail. i have pressed the Schrader valve when everything was hooked up, and no pressure at all. new fuel pump, even though the other one was working fine. i pulled the rail today and the injectors. cleaned and tested them, changed all the o rings, gonna put it all back together tomorrow, just fearing im gonna have the same result

Welcome to the forum

There may be another inline filter next to the high pressure pump in the frame rail, there is a fuel pump in the gas tank and another one in the frame rail under drivers seat area

The canister filter you changed often didn't even have a filter inside, it is there to store fuel for the high pressure Fuel injection pump when the 2.3l was switch over to fuel injection, the 2.9l Rangers had those for a few years as well

On the engine is the Fuel Pressure regulator(FPR), its a small cylinder with Return Fuel line and a vacuum hose attached
Pull off this Return line
Turn the key on and off a few times, fuel should NOT come out of the Return line, if it does the lines have been reversed somewhere
Fuel should come out of the FPR's connection, after 3rd turn on of the key, if both fuel pumps are working

Try to blow into the return line, its just a hose that goes back to the gas tank no valves just a straight shot, if its clogged up maybe thats why fuel couldn't get into the rail

there was a pretty old filter in there, i changed it. I currently dont get the fuel even to get to the fuel rail, so no fuel will come out of the fpr. i hooked everything back the way it was before. currently, the fuel supply line goes from the front of the fuel pump directly to the fuel rail. i feel like when the pump is on it is pushin fuel to the fuel filter somehow

in the picture above, the top left hose is the supply to the filter housing, bottom left is the return to the tank. on the top right, that line goes all the way to the rail, and is the return. bottom right goes to the pump, and after the pump is a linethat supply's the fuel rail. i get zero fuel in that line

So you are saying it looks like this

Gas tank pump------------------canister filter------------------------high pressure pump----------------------------------------fuel rail----------FPR---Return line

That is correct

I found this diagram for the canister filter: https://ww2-secure.justanswer.com/up...uel_filter.gif

It looks like what you said as far as the hook up of the lines

I guess you need to pull the line off the pump, in the frame, that comes from the canister and turn on the key a few times to see if fuel is coming out, if not then problem is in the canister
If fuel is coming out the high pressure pump may be bad

in that diagram, it would be correct if the arrow was pointing the other way. im pretty sure the lines are all hooked up correctly, but not 100 percent. they are hooked up how they were when the truck was running. it seems like when the pump is on that it is pumping towards the canister not towards the front of the engine. but if im correct then the fuel line is going from the front of the hpfp to the rail.

also, the lines on the canister from the tabk are diff sizes so i think they couldnt possibly be connected wrong if i tried

in the diagram you posted, the line labeled 9k151 says return, but that is the one going to my hpfp

I didn't make the diagram so can't say its 100% correct for all Fords

I would take the line from the canister to hpfp off at the hpfp end and see if fuel comes our when you cycle the key on and off

so, it turns out that the pumps can run backwards. For some reason, the red wire is the negative, and the black is the positive. reversed them and ahe fired right up!...... and ran as shitty as she did prior to the filter change! So i crawled under the truck and found that my negative cable attached to the starter, was LOOSE LOOSE LOOSE! Tightened her up, and SHE PURRS! Idle issues, power loss , black smoke from tailpipe, backfiring all from a loose negative terminal wire. Tha ks for all of your suggestions!
