Icon7 2002 PATS system anti theft

Does anybody know if you use a NON-PATS key in your ignition on a 2002 Ranger XLT does it LOCK OUT the Computer or does it just not let it Start with that key. I have a spare key made for safety on the outside of the Truck in case I lock my keys inside. I was told by the guy that made the key that you should never use it to try and start the vehicle, because it will lock out the computer and you have to have the DEALER UNLOCK ($300)it in order to be able to start it again. I just want to know just in case I do it by mistake if I will be Stranded or will just putting the PATS KEY in turn everything back to NORMAL.I know somebody out ther knows the answer to this question.
Thanks for any advise.

Thanks for the Reply, I was afraid it would LOCK the COMPUTER out and be Stranded and not be able to start. So the guy that made the key for me does not know what he is talking about. The guy he told me had something else go wrong other than trying to use a NON CODED KEY.

I did exactly what you're talking about. I went and had a normal key cut. It unlocked the doors and unlocked the steering wheel, but the truck wouldn't start. I stuck my PATS key in afterwards and if I remember right, it started right up. Although I do carry two PATS keys on seperate keychains in my pocket at all times, just in case.

OK, that sounds like it is Safe to use that key in the ignition and not mess anything up. I may get brave and just try it and see. I know that either myself or my Wife will lock the keys in one day and use the spare to open the door and forget about the ignition.
Thanks for the Response.

No problem man. I know when I tried it, I was 30 miles from home, and I about sh*t myself.

I used a Non-PATS Key in the ignition without knowing it wasn’t a good key.

Key turned as PATS Key would be nothing happened.

Truck still worked OK with the correct PATA Key.

Went to local Ford Shop had a second key programed and now use the non-pats key for entry only.
