Will a 2001 4.0 work in a 2006 Ranger?
I am purchasing a 2006 Ranger 4.0 automatic 4x4, with a blown engine. I have located a 4.0 from a 2001 Ranger auto 4x4, am I able to drop the 4.0 from the 01 into the 06 with few issues? I will also have the transmission and transfer case from the 01. Or are they not compatible? I know these engines changed at some point. Thanks.

Yes, the 2001 Ranger should have the same 4.0l SOHC engine as the 2006 Ranger(2001-2011)
No, no issues using the whole power train as long as both are automatics, or both manuals, and both 4x4s
Automatics were 5R55E
Manual M5R1HD
Transfer case BW1354
The 2006 intake wiring connectors for sensors may be different, so you may need to swap some over, to match connections, i.e. 2006 parts swapped over to 2001 intake
1997-2003 4.0l SOHC engines had faulty timing chain tensioner from the factory, there are 2, change them for new ones, easy to do, and they should be changed every 100k miles in any case
There is a 3rd party metal thermostat housing that is better to use that the Ford Plastic model, just a heads up if yours ever leaks
