The "What did you do to your Ranger today" thread

Haha I agree 100%. The manual makes it so much nicer to drive. Gotta couple more things to change over. I still keep reaching for the auto shifter at times lol. Was really not a bad swap at all. Everything was 100% plug and play.

This was my main concern with doing the conversion. I did not want to hack my original harness and ecm. I picked up a manual ecm and engine harness. As well as the manual tranny harness. All I had to do was unplug the auto engine harness, throw the ecm in and plug in the manual harness and it's running as normal. No CEL or anything. Reverse lights work perfectly as well. My truck is a 98 so I did not need to worry about PATs issues or anything.

I took the easy way out and jumped a few wires at the trans harness and got a custom tune. so much easier than trying to add a different PCM. Plus if you plug a computer into my OBD port my VIN numbers still match. When you use a manual PCM you no longer are VIN matching and that has the possibility to cause issues down the road.

!! Yeah!
My 98 4r44e is shot, I was about to buy a rebuild kit. F that! How does 5th work? Is the wiring plug n play too?

A truck eqiuped with a 5r55e is called a 5 speed because 1st gear is over driven for second gear this is accomplished in the computer. Transmission is still mechanically still a 4 speed. When I did the swap I installed the harness from my old 4r44e into my 5r55e and yes it was plug and play. This maintained pin programming to my trucks pcm. Be aware there is a small 2 wire plug on the inside of the main plug that will swap between the two plugs . This must be unpluged before you pull the main plug from the case. Dont be intimidated when you take the pan off and look you will see it and say oh ok.

I feel like should add info. You can get your automatic trans from ether a 6 or 4 cyl. Just R&R the bell housing wth your original one. I recomend you change the front seal while your at it. I got my trans from a 4.0 explorer and insralled it in a 3.0 Ranger. Also the 5r55e had two sensor plugs on the outside of rhe case, your pcm dont need them but leave them in to fill the holes. Awhile back I took a A4LDE from a 87 Tbird 2.3 turbo and installed it into my 88 Ranger 2.9, simple bell housing change job done. So its not rocket science. If you decide to tackel this, when you R&R your bell housing the output shaft will come out with the bell. Be sure to install the output shaft back in before you install the bell. this will guide the pump housing into your over drive drum and prevent binding. Dont worrie nothing is going fall into a hundred pieces when you pull it apart.

This isn't something that I did to my Ranger, but something my Ranger did to my Ranger. I was heading down the highway, going about 70, and suddenly I feel a bump, it felt like I went over a speedbump. I figured it was a hole for something that I didn't see, so I continued on my way. Then something caught my eye, a gray empty coolant container flying out of my bed. I have a bed cap, so that type of thing shouldn't happen. I looked down in my mirror, and my bed cap had folded over backwards(I have one of the heavy ones). I noticed that it was sitting slanted as well. I pulled off the highway ans found that one of the housings holding the cap onto my bed had ripped out. When that happened, the cap had rotated enough for wind to get under the front of it, causing it to flip open backwards. Due to the angle, there was part of the metal clips on top of my tailgate when the other side slammed down onto it, causing a nasty dent.
Something else that happened the other day is my transmission failed. D and R don't work, but 2 and 1 do. Found a used tranny for $300 and I'm putting it in next weekend. [IMG][IMG]

Been a busy weekend...
New brake rotors, drums, pads, shoes. Cleanup and painted calipers. New American Racing AR172 Baja wheels (15X8) with new Cooper Cobra GT Radials. Gave it a bath just as a typical spring thunderstorm rolled in. Finished washing it anyway, so Mother Nature can do a spot-free rinse!
The last 3 pics are the chrome Lincoln lever mods I did earlier in the week.
