The "What did you do to your Ranger today" thread

Don't know why I didn't do this when I first bought the truck, but I changed the transmission fluid in it. It was awful, black as coal and probably had 10lbs of debris on the magnetic pick-up drain plug. Put 3 quarts of fresh Dex/Merc and then took it for a drive. Wow what a difference! Smoother shifts and goes into gear better too. Front and rear axles and probably transfer case will be done soon after my findings today.

Hauled a washer and dryer to a friend's moms house.
Oh the joys of being the only teenager with a truck.

It will tell you what fluid it takes on the transmission dip stick.

Today I learned that I've been putting the wrong size rotors on my truck. Super awesome.
Last week I picked up some American Racing Black Baja wheels and General Grabber AT2s, look and feel awesome. All of the grinding (that I thought was due to the brakes) is gone which means that my previous 18" wheels and 265/60R18 Falken Wildpeak ATs were rubbing. I learned that my sway bar bushing is busted, so I might be replacing those as well.

Truth be told, if it is black, it ought to be left alone. Black tranny fluid = bad transmission. Simple as that.

If the fluid is that bad, the tranny is toasted already. Even with mercon V inside, it's only a matter of time before those worn clutches and parts begin to slip and otherwise malfunction. Although I'd agree that the improper fluid certainly isn't helping.

What to do ?
LOL I stared at my 1998 B3000 reg cab 4x4 and my 98 extracab Ranger XLT 2WD wondering whats my best way to get a 4x4 extra cab out of the two. The 2wd extra cab Ranger is my Daily driver, the 4x4 Mazda is my complete but spare parts vehicle, both are 3.0 engines the 2wd is auto trans and the 4x4 is 5speed stick. So what to do ? Anyone have a suggestion ?

Id like to, is that easy with the two different front end set ups ? The two wheel drive has the coil spring front end so not sure it could take the swap over from the B3000 gas shock suspension 4x4 parts directly, lemme know if this is something worth doing i have the tools. I do see they both had the torsion bar set up. The drive train I'll figure out no problem I'm just curious how to swap on that front axle and maneuver it around the coil springs. Thanks

I appreciate the concern, but my 1992 has a M5OD-R1 5spd. It just calls for straight Mercon ATF which is what Dex/Merc fluid is to my knowledge. I could have used Mercon 5, but the Dex/Merc was cheaper.

In short, is it worth doing? No, buy something else. Can it be done? Yes. However, if the 2wd was a torsion bar suspension (The Edge comes to mind) then this is much simpler. Bonus if it's prewired for 4x4 already.

98 2wd to 4x4 ?
Yeah my 98 2wd looks a lot like all the same suspension wise as the 98 B30004x4 with the exception of the front coils being in place of where the gas shocks and gas shock towers are on the 4x4 but the coils are a bit larger diameter on the 2wd of course and the frame bulges out a couple extra inches but it has the same key lock style torsion bars running backwards from the front left and right swing arms same as the 4x4 so not sure if that means I could still swap in that front axle and just trade the swing arms and torsion bars with the 4x4 or not, maybe I'll just put a camper on the single cab 4x4 and sale the extra cab or mount the extra cab on the smaller 4x4 frame by trimming it out for the frame rails. I just prefer the larger cab cause I prefer the leg room and space of the extra cab. It's probably such an old subject the 4x2 swap to 4x4 but I have everything there to pick and choose so just wondering if I'm wasting time thinking of doing this based on what I have but they look pretty close to being able to work lol. I either have two for sale here or gonna make one I like and have spare parts.

I've only been on this site maybe 3 times... hard working with smartphone... attempting too ask a question... I'm as fumb as dirt trying too figure out how too post a question ... I own a factory stock 2006 Ford Ranger FX4 Off Road 4.0 L Auto Trans ... vin #1fTZR15E06PA20725 I'm trying too figure out if it's a real level II Ford Motor company claims it's a level II via the V# the dealer says it has a level II trim package via the V# but they sounded unsure themselves telling me this... I want too put a Detroit Trutrac up front ... and need too know if my existing rear end is good enough as is??? Being what I believe is a limited slip...I apologize if I'm asking this question in the wrong place... any help would be greatly appreciated... God Bless... Dave

I have been buying parts, while waiting on cooling weather to install them.
I still have not drove my truck since buying it But I will say I am getting closer.
In this latest batch of parts I purchased new mud flaps, new OEM Ranger Fender badges, touch up paint, OEM roof drip rail moldings plus materials to paint them, tailgate cables all new brake parts and will be slowly working on replacing them.
My back wasn't ready to start working on the brakes but I wanted to make sure the parts I ordered was correct so I installed the drivers side front brake parts and repacked the bearings again with Ford Bearing grease.
I used Wagner pads, drilled and slotted rotors and powder coated power stop rebuilt calipers with Napa premium flex hoses
My old fender badges had XLT I opted for new Plain Ranger Badges because that is all I could find OEM and New at the time I was shopping for them
I removed the original badges so I could compound and polish the paint work panel by panel.
I attached some pictures of my work more to come as I slowly get more done.
As you can see this work has been done in stages as I am very limited by pain and my budget as what I can do.
For contrast I am including some before pictures of the drivers side front suspension and brakes

Transmission Drain Plug
Today, I tried to change the transmission fluid and rounded the transmission drain plug! I've got a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT manual transmission.
I thought to myself, "Oh great, no problem, I'll just go online and order another plug." After almost 2 hours of scouring the internet I have not seen a single plug that fits my truck. Am I either crazy or am I missing something really obvious? On the Ford OEM parts site, the automatic tranny plug was $100+ dollars. How is this even legal? What a massive rip off...
Do you all have any suggestions of sources where I can get another transmission drain plug?
Would be much appreciated!
