But I didn't get the transmission from the 04 anyways. I was at the pick and pull Thursday and was pulling parts off the 04 and noticed someone took the engine but left the transmission. I didn't need the transmission then or I would have taken it lol. Thursday night I was backing into my parents driveway and heard a loud clang as if I hit something and lost reverse. Went to get the transmission on Friday (yesterday) and someone else already took it.
So I got a transmission out of a 98 explorer with the 5r55e and got it swapped in yesterday. Had 170k on the clock, but I was desperate for a transmission and this was the only one I could find. Got it for $150. There were some newer ones local shops and full service yards were selling with less than 100k miles on them but they all wanted over $500 for them.
My trucks showed signs of the trans going out since I bought it but the symptoms disappeared and I thought it was good to go but it wasn't. When I drained the trans yesterday and pulled the pan the fluid was nothing but metallic and had huge flakes of metal in the pan. When I pulled the pan of the new one the fluid was clean and no signs of metal anywhere.
The new transmission has made a huge difference so much more power, smooth shifts can't even feel it shift anymore just see the rpms drop now when it shifts.

Replaced the trailing arm bushings and an alignment. Four hundred bucks later and it rides better than a brand new Tahoe!
Also in the works, buying a set of 16 inch teardrops from an Explorer.

You can swap it with a rear axle out of an Explorer if you hate it that much. Then you'll have 4 wheel disc.
