Timing chain cover removal. Do I need to remove engine?

I am wondering if anyone has gotten away with not removing the engine and successfully removed and resealed the timing chain cover as well as the oil pan?

If we knew what you are working on, it would help.

Going to guess it's a Ford Ranger
But knowing the year, engine, transmission, 2x4/4x4 would help

My bad. It’s a 98 4.0l 4x4 pushrod engine. Don’t know the transmission size
