Switcing to manual hubs

Switcing to manual hubs
Are manual hubs better, more durable? The PO of my truck with auto hubs had mentioned having them changed a few times. Are the stock hubs bad? or was he just beating this truck (from other things Ive seen with it I think he was hard on it) If my auto hubs go bad is it better to switch to manual? The only times Ive used the 4wd have been in the snow lately, and then I use it everytime I go into my parking space at home, so its on for maybe 20 feet then off again. As Im backing into my spot I click the 4x on and then spin the rear tires until the front engage. If I switched (if possible) to the manual, is it safe to pretty much leave them locked up in the winter. I wouldnt mind getting my hands on a manual t-case either someday. I guess Id prefer old fashioned and durable than to have to hope things I dont want to spend money on dont break when I need them.
On a side note, I looked at Fords website today and realized I wouldnt want a newer version of my truck. As long as the body is solid Im going to keep this one forever, just make it all better as things go bad. By next year I hope to do a BL and put 33s on, I should need the tires by then
