Remote Starter/Alarm Opinions...

Neighbourhood is going down the drain lately. Caught some kids dumping out old motor oil from my truck all over the parking lot the other day. Makes me think its time to invest in a security system....

I always wanted a remote starter for these Candian winters, so what a good time to get both!

To those who have a starter/alarm combo..I need your opinions...

I see some systems are 1-way and others are 2-way (ie: the little key-fob thing lets you know if your alarm goes off, and to confirm your truck is actually started). I can get a 1-way combo for $400 installed (lifetime warrenty and all that jazz), which seems to be a good price around here. The 2-way combo would start at about $650. Now, is the 2-way worth the extra price? How often will I be able to pick up a notification my alarm went off if say I am 5 city blocks away? The other side of a mall?

I don't want to spend the extra money if it will only alert me if I am in sight of the truck.

What is the opinions of you all?

i have the 2-way and had it installed for $400. it's a hornet N553T

i personally think its worth every penny. it lets me know if my truck is locked/unlocked. the temperature inside my truck. remote start. you can also wire it up to let your windows up/down. i've woke up to my remote beeping in my room and ran outside to see that someone had got my door open on my truck, so the 2-way feature is really useful sometimes. but $650 is pretty steep, so maybe you could buy the kit yourself and see how much they would charge for install?

Remember, my prices are Canadian dollars, so I pay up the a$$ for everything in life.

i wouldn't say it's anywhere near a mile... it can probably go 300-500 yards if you're out in the open.

Note that the newer rangers have a chip in the key so you will need a transponder for the chip or you'll lose your spare key when they install it in the truck...

Why the ranger has a chip but the king ranch F-350 doesn't I will never understand!

my remote start cost 44 bucks at walmart, bought it over 2 years ago and use it EVERY DAY, I lengthened the antenna and ran it up my door jam all the way up to my sun visor and I get about 200 yards or 600 feet reception!! Cost me 75 bucks to have it installed by a company that comes to you for car audio work/custom installs.

If you got that kind of money and want all those bells and whistles I would say go for the fancy ones!!

I also bought the exact same one for my wife's car at the same time and did the same thing with the antenna.

We would be lost with out them little 44 dollar gizmoes!! they spoil ya for sure in the winter/summer.
