Welcome to the forum
2001 Ranger will have a 4.0l SOHC engine
VIN identification is E
If you look at your VIN the 8th digit will be "E" that's what resellers will want to know
The older 4.0l OHV VIN was "X", different engine
Explorers used the same engine, but VIN was "K", so E or K will work in your 2001 Ranger
Google: remanufactured ford 4.0 l sohc engine
Always have my engines rebuilt by me or a local Machine Shop
Check local machine shops

Yes, as far as a swap
The early 4x4 4.0l SOHC's did have an intrenal Balancer that was added to off-set the Live Axle front drive shaft always spinning, engineers thought there may be a vibration
Turned out there was no reason for the Balancer, so it was dropped in 2004/5 from all Rangers/Explores, so same engine in 2WD or 4WDs, sans Balancer
Which means you can replace with either type, without Balancer is best, one less thing to go wrong, lol, but they rarely had any issues
