Quick ? about 3rd brake light/cargo light!

My 3rd brake light right now has no cargo light. I have been looking at the LED brake lights and the one I saw has a cargo light. Will the cargo light be inoperable on my truck since it didn't come stock with one? If it is operable, what do you use to turn it on, the dimmer/interior light switch?

Yes....unfortunately you have to use the interior dome/dimmer switch to turn it on. However, this causes an obvious glare, since both lights are on. I'd recommend wiring your own circuit for the cargo lamp, so it doesn't come on with the interior dome.

So Ranger's with the cargo light stock even have to use the interior dome light switch? There is no seperate switch?

Yep...as stupid as it sounds, Ford simply ran a jumper wire from the dome light circuit. It's pretty basic...if you imagine looking out an interior window with lots of light behind it to the darkness, you won't see much but your own reflection. The same goes with the truck.....it's stupid, but can easily be fixed.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you could just cut the wire coming from the cargo light right at the switch behind the dash and run that wire to another powered switch.

Can you read wire schematics?

Here ya go:

The black wire with a pink stripe provides the supply for the lamp, along with the interior lamp relay. However, the black with light blue stripe wire provides supply for the interior lamp. Based on the schematic above, if you tapped into the interior lamp circuit (BK/LB) with a toggle, you would be able to kill the interior (dome) light while maintaining the circuit to the Cargo lamp.
