Icon5 question about my buddies ranger

my buddy has a 98 or 99 ranger, i cant remeber and whenever he puts it in reverse it starts to die and most of the time dies and he thinks its his tranny but i dont think so cause if so then it'd do it in forward also so i was thinkin somethin like a vacume issue or something, have any of you guys heard of this or experienced it, and he's just gonna buy a new tranny soon but that'd be a waste of money if its not the tranny, so could anyone help me?

Don't think it's the tranny. When in reverse, it puts a higher load on the engine and something is cutting out. Not real sure what it would be tho.

A bunch of older trucks tend to do that, honestly mid to late 90's do it lots around me - I have a 92 f150 that does that at work.. the work truck.. perhaps you shoudl try changing out the diff fluid, it might be stalling up jsut enough to cause the engine to clunk out on ya.. give it some good maintenance
