Well, I haven't got a cone filter, so for me the entire question is "academic" anyway, lol...

I removed the silencer on my airbox, and I'm wondering if this would be a good thing to put on the opening of the airbox, it could be like a pre-filter for my nanofiber filter. Any possibility it would keep some water out as well, or is the material too thin?

If you cant tell I believe I killed my MAF because I think I over oiled my k&n
Did you take it out to oil it ? I have only know one person that did that and they left it in and oiled it. The directions say take it out, clean it, let it dry, oil it, let it dry, then put it back in. Never had a problem with the one in my focus and I probally over oil mine.

I dont think I let mine dry out enough, I let it set for like an hour than I had to play little brother and go get my sister who was lost. If the new one Im getting works I can practice enlarging the MAF :)

Dang it D... now I'm gonna have nightmares...

I used a pantyhose type 'prefilter' on my ATV for a while, before I went K&N and Outerwares. Even now the Outerware collects so much more dust and dirt its unbelievable. I'd recomend something of this sort for any cone type filter.
