Oil Filter Relocation?

Oil Filter Relocation?

I was randomly browsing around.. and took a peek at this...

Whats your general views on this by chance? It sounds interesting, can put it in a MUCH more open position to get your hands into for replacement...

I dunno, just a random questions on it I suppose.. may try it out someday

The 4.0L's are in a good spot I though. If I had a 4wd F-150 with a 5.4L I would for sure get one.

Ive thought about getting one. The filter is in a very tight place on my 3.0, it's squeezed between the manifold and starter, which means a LOT OF FUN when it comes time to change oil

On my '94 S-10 I had a guy make up two hydraulic hoses to fit my fuel filter connections and bought a marine filter system I got at NAPA.
The filter is about 3 times larger and has a drain. I mounted it to a subframe under the floor.
The really nice thing is it had a shutoff on top. Close the shutoff, take off the old filter, install the new filter, open shutoff and start the truck. There was no pressure loss in the system.
I know the Ranger will be different but it works good and filters are at NAPA for $4 less than the Chevy stock filter.
Another alternative to check out.

Oh yes it does, I've burned my arm so many times on those damn headers.

I was looking through a magazine I think I am going to get one just for the hell of it. I hate where it is on my 3.0

I have never burned my hand or arm cause I dont change it if its hot.

I try not to change it when it's hot, but even when cold it's still in an awkward location to access, no question about that.

Nope. Your not. I do the same thing. I've always been told that you should change oil hot.

Drain the oil when its hot. You can wait till things cool down to get to the filter.

It's pretty easy to get at on a 4.0L. I hear sometimes those relocating gizmos can leak or something. If you burn yourself though, it sounds like a good investment.

The most annoying part of the 4.0 though, is that the frame crossmember ends up getting a bit of oil on it everytime.. plus there isnt any room for your hand and the filter to go, otehr then straight down.. so you get oil all over your hand and the filter.. plus wherever that happens to spread to. Sucks sometimes Got a new stain on my jacket because of that, hehe

I ordered the kit for my 3.0, it should be here tomorrow and I'll install at my next oil change.

There's really only two reasons I'm getting it:

1) I don't like cleaning up the mess after removing the filter, it gets all over the starter and if I don't get it clean it'll drip on my garage floor and driveway.

2) It's a literal pain in the neck for me to change my oil. My neck is fused together so reaching up while lying on my back can be quit painful.

My S-10 has one.. it was moved to right up on top of the engine, in a nice spot so the oil will drain straight down, but you can change the oil filter from the top of teh engine right as soon as you open the hood.. saves having to reach up up and up to do it...

When it gets daylight, I will go ahead and take a couple pictures for ya.

I have one on my truck (302) so I had no choice but to have one. My main annoyance is it leaks, no matter what i've done it leaks, barely any, but enough to be annoying. I have my filter on the radiator support, it is extremely easy to change the filter though. I can get a pic of interest.

yea a pic would be nice. What connection leaks? At the block or at the filter?

I get leaks at the block and the filter, just where the rubber lines attach, the hose clamps just don't seem to be able to apply enough pressure. Not all that suprising since the oil pump can be running over 40 psi of oil pressure at times. Another small problem i've run into is that I can't tighten the plate that screws into the block all the way down, or else I can't get the hoses on because of interference from the power steering gear box.
