If it's considered totalled, I'm robbin the hell out of this thing. Sh*t they won't notice. I'm talking transfer case, maybe the aluminum driveshaft. I just want all my nitty gritty parts off if they do decide to total it, i.e. rear diff cover, airbox with gate valve for snorkel. I'm gonna tear into the thing, it's here til thursday. If that's the case I might get another ranger if they give me enough for another fx4 with less than 30k. Like I said she only had 28k miles =[. Guess I don't have to worry about that oil change anymore though.

Thats really bad dude. If I wasn't body lifting my truck I would be asking you about the bumper too. But I wouldn't go selling anything till you know what you are getting for it.

What wire did you have attached to the battery with a fuse not within 12" of it?

Otherwise the only thing that could have done that is a internal short in the battery.

I have religiously put in fusing on all my wiring for a similar reason to this.

Efan-winch- Offroad lights, amp all fused.

Now optima is giving me the run around. I've called three different numbers and they keep referring me to a "Joan Derr" her number is 18887013007. Her voicemail says "hello it's friday august fourth, i'm away from my desk. leave me a message and i'll call you back monday." Well it's Tuesday. I've tryed calling three dif customer service lines for optima all referring me to her. Refusing to give me another number for someone else I can talk to. They all just say"any number I give you will just refer back to her anyway". Dude, I'm pissed. I wanna talk to the president of the company right now. Screw thier claims rep, I got enough problems with my own ins claim rep. I'm seriously starting to lose it. I smell like charred plastic and fiberglass, my clothes are black, not to mention the fact that my truck is fubar'd. I need to take a couple deep breathes before I flip out...

Efan was fused, piaa ballast was fused, and my amp wire was fused a few inches from the battery.

Optima will probably give you a new battery....

If they do that, to be a smart ***, send that one back as a core....with a letter saying "Thanks, battery worked awesome, for cooking marshmellows, didnt really do me no good when my truck was up in flames in a parking lot either"

I'm trying to read the question... so does that mean all wires connected to the batter should have a fuse within 12" of the battery??

I added three wires to my posi terminal. Efan(fused), Piaa Ballast Box(fused), and 4ga amp power wire (fused). All fused within inches of the battery. I can get pics of the terminals. Look char'd but otherwise fine. No connections were touching anything they shouldn't have. I'm clueless. If you look at my truck, everything around the battery is white from the heat. The battery looks like a 75 y/o six pack oxidized to high hell. It was def the posi terminal end of the battery. I'm about to drive to fla to straighten out my ins companys a$$ then drive to wisconsin to straighten out optima's a$$. Someone better be calling me back soon!!!

The passenger seat has scraps of fiberglass from the hood, my tint with the shattered window stuck to it, and the heat shield/sound dampener material from under the hood.

I'd suggest if any of you guys have optimas calling Joan Derr @ 1-888-701-3007 and express your concern...It'd help my case out a bit too. Leave a voicemail if nothing else. Something needs to happen here.

that is pretty funny! Kick some butt with the insurance clown and then tackle an optima rep. that would make me happy.

Holy crapola! I know the feeling though...I was asleep when my Mom woke me up and said "I think somebody just ran into your truck." Shiite happens...but if the company lets you keep the truck, might as well try to salvage all the parts you can.

OMFG! that sux real bad dude!......I AM REALLY SORRY ABOUT THIS! i hope your insurance will help you out!........i wouldn't buy it back.....there is alot of work to get it back on the road.......................SUE optima battery for it...........

please be easy on the firefighers.....they were only doing there job.....if a vehicle is locked and burning from under the hood, we have to break out windows to get to the hood latch.....since the fire was on the drivers side and so is the hood latch the firefighter was in a hurry to get into the truck since that area had intense heat there.....

again i am sorry for you loss! hope the insurance company makes it better......if only my truck would explode.........i wouldn't have to sell it!

Holy **** that sucks!!

Is it possible the cruise control device they are recalling on almost ALL Ford vehicles except the Ranger was the cause? Maybe it somehow caused the battery to short out and blow up? *shrug*

I've been a firefighter/emt for seven years. I know the window has to be broken to gain access. There was a big enough area that the moron city ff's couldn't gotten in. Then the rifled through all my paperwork, failed to conteact me when my name and cell number is all over reciepts and other paperwork in the truck. Then they confiscated my box of bullets. They asked what are those for. I said here's my gun permit a$$ now "gimme back my bullets".

KBB suggested retail is $20k. So $12k in damage=total loss or "totalled"

This a very good example of why I will never own an optima battery. This is not the first one I have seen do this.
