My truck is a gas pig. Any suggestions to improve my MPG?

My bone stock 4.0 manual 4wd gots 20mpg is I drive like a sane person, or 18 if I run it hard......So I throw caution to the wind and run the crap out of it. The only thing that costs alot more for me by doing that is rear tires! 12k miles and they are hammered. I buy new fronts every winter, and put the fronts on the back.

My low fuel light just came on and I have 285 miles on this tank. It's one of my better tanks this year. That is also with a 4.0 SOHC. I keep my tires aired up nicely and I drive fairly moderatly. I also have a hi-rise campershell, 2 spare tires, hi-lift, and a bunch of other gear I travel with daily so my mileage could be better. When I was stock I could get 21-22 highway and 18-19 around town, but now with larger tires, a lot of gear, extra rock armor, and campershell that rises 6" above the cab I hurt my mileage.

i'm not sure if this is correct, but on the interstate heading back up to school yesterday, i was going between 70-85/90 most of the way and I got pretty good mileage (got about ~180 miles for half a tank (from full) ) and I got back in a record time for me (2 hrs 40 minutes instead of 3 hrs) I felt like it was a good mix between 'alright' mileage and making good time

I used to do a lot of cross state driving and in the old 3.0 my best time/mileage combo was 74-76 mph... however I still believe there was something wrong with my engine

Was Worth my effort to me and mine
Hey guys, I have posted this same bit of info on a couple other threads about gas milege....
I did use the fuel injector cleaner from wally world the one in the large gold and silver bottles for large vehicles. Once a week for a couple three weeks. The reason I kept using it is this... last fall a mechanic friend cleaned the injectors on my nephews ranger. I know for a fact one bottle would not clean those injectors!!! So common sense made me think to keep adding it for a couple three times just to find out... YES it worked... I now get 20ish mpg on longer road trips and less obviously puttering around town...
Part two. I can watch the milege go down litteraly if I buy cheap gas, gas meaning speedway or discount gas or etc... I found two stations in my home town that do sell quality gas and stay with them. BP is one. Funny thing is I work for BP and the one I work for gets a lot of "non" BP gas dumped in. I can tell in one 20 mile if I use gas from work just how much my beast doesnt like it. The beast is extremly picky on what gas I put in. 3rd. I dont do the jack rabbit take offs and I putter around at 55-60 mph average.

I don't know what kind of gas mileage I'm getting yet in my 1999 Mazda B4000 that I bought last Monday, but what I do know is that I filled it up for the first time last Tuesday and had to get gas in it again yesterday (Saturday). I got about 250 miles on that first tank of gas (just normal street and highway driving) but had to fill it up again only after 4 days of driving it.
It cost me about $50 each time I filled it up.
My truck is a 5 speed auto. 2W / 4WD. 4.0L SOHC V6 Engine with 100K mile on it.
Is this typical? Or is there a problem that's causing it to eat gas like crazy?
Thanks!

I'd been getting 320 per tank, with a bit left over, filling up just as the check gauge light comes up.
Lately though it's only been 260-280.
I got 325 after I changed my oil, for a few tanks, but I'm back down to 250 range.
I think gas quality has gone down hill lately.
I got close to my 320 when I ran on Plus gas that the ****ing gas station had put on the far left hand side, where Regular usually is..
I didn't feel like fighting it.. so I just drove off, with $55.00 worth of Plus, opposed to $55.00 worth of Regular.
I think I need to pull my airfilter back out, and possibly get new tires.
BTW: I shot up to 320 per 15.5 gallons of gas, after switching my spark plugs out to 4x Platinum BOSCH.
Falling in love with the Toyota FJ cruiser. Only thing holding me back is not having a career, just a job.. lol.

The first thing is a Tune up. your plugs and wires are about due and your injectors probably need changing as well. 2nd thing is change your air filter to a K&N air filter or CAI kit and switch to 10W30 oil. Just doing that you can notice a huge change in MPG's. last thing you can do is to change your exhaust and drive slower. Also you might want to switch to 4.10 gear ratios that will give you better take off power and lower rpm cruising speeds.
