Re: Hello im new
ok its not any of my business but a beater car can be bought for $500-1000 depending on condition, make, etc...and u can easily get 30mpg. an old accord, camery, tercel, coralla, civic, etc...is what u need. also i dont see how ur getting 16mpg with a 3.0 unless u have a HEAVY right foot. thats just my opinion and advice so that it how u want.

That is pretty bad, at least compared to what I get. I have a fully loaded 4.0L ex-cab 4x4, pretty much the worst case for Ranger gas mileage. My city/highway mixed numbers usually hover around what you're getting, 16-18. On my recent highway trip down to PA and back I nipped at the 20 MPG mark. Now of course I've gotten worse. Off-roading around PA I got like 12 MPG! But then I expected it..
Then again, 20 MPG still isn't a significant improvement. Ultimately I feel your pain. (I think we all do, to some degree.) My 'budgeted' fuel expense for a month is $70/mo. I just added up some recipts and I'm at $265 just for October so far! Whops!
Ultimately I think Dave's got the best advice. If the weather works out for yah, pickup a used beater bike. It'll get awesome milage. I usually keep my fuel usage low by riding in the good months. Sadly the cold weather is here and it's less of an option now..

how about a grocery store as a new job? high turnover rates, less spent on gas, still have an opportunity to make tips, if u bag (easy). its just a suggest tho, bro. dont fret, keep the truck.
another thing to consider is that if you get a new Focus, unless the dealer agrees to pay off your Ranger AND use it as a $2000 (min) deposit along WITH instant savings on the Focus AND you get a low APR, your screwed. the $100 u save a month is a little unlikely. im assuming your still upside down on your Ranger AND as your trade-in value will be around $12,000 (your've changed it from stock which is kinda looked down on at dealerships plus dealers never give an excellent quality rating on trade value) its unlikely you'll get anything less than bent over with the Focus.
Bottom line bro, your young (assumption, no offense if your not but under 25....thats young to a dealer), a guy, and your trade in value is kinda high....
keep the truck. Get a new job, ask to be transferred to a new position at your job (no driving required), or ask for help with the folks, something other than trading in on a new vehicle.

This is an old thread..sorry I'm so late but as mentioned in an above reply gas is still pretty cheap by comparison. Not only that, when you adjust prices for inflation we're paying less than we did in 1980..
Clickety click
I pay about $250-$300 a month on gas so I hear what you're saying...I personally don't see the benefit in trading in, especially if you don't want to...but that's just me

WRX + house + bullsh!t = flaming thread
Right now, the general approach for these type of subjects is to just let them be. They'll be moved to the right topic if off-topic, or locked only if it's totally getting out of hand, but mostly we'll just let them die out naturally. It's just you guys who keep posting on it that keep it alive... :p
