It's better getting it shaved down than to let it suffer covered in matted fur and poop.
Seriously, I've seen some BADLY matted cats.
One was so bad the "mat" covered it's entire back. It was like a shell.
This is my "dog mod" CuJo. She's an 8 yr old Rotti. That's an old pic, but the only one I have uploaded at the moment.
Right now she's wearing her Hallowe'en bandanna, it has little bats on it. She loves her bandannas, too.
I have more pictures of her and my b/f's border collie.... guess who's the dominant one?

the first pic is my brothers dog (but i always take care of him so he's practically mine lol) this is Xavier :
and this was my old puppy Sadie (she was nuts and attacked any and everything - she was broken, broke my heart but i had to give her away - she needed more activity than what i was able to give her)
