Initial 4x4 conversion vs. 4x2 performance and driveshaft length considerations

I may have a little more experience than you but your flex and approach & breakover angles should leave me spining my 4 tires. I wish i could wheel with you some day but ~1800 miles is a long way to wheel!
As always I look forward to seeing all the pictures of your newly improved 2wd truck!!

Yea I know you are 4x4 but your truck's title i believe still says 2wd, so that means I get to call your truck 2wd even though your 2wd truck can crawl over my 4x4!!!

Thanks. It did well wheeling with a built Jeep but I'm getting a front Aussie Locker when I can. I've watched your videos and been impressed on what a front locker does. Even if you lift a tire -- you've still got some go.
Yes, it has more flex than IFS but you can still lift a front tire easier on mine -- the rear flexes more.
And James, thank you as well. You'll figure out what you want to do soon -- then change your mind later if your anything like me. How many builds has my truck been through now, lol?...

It's really, really hard to account for, Chris. I accumulated the parts over a couple of years time, making the best deals I could. Rebuild parts, gear ratio changes and so on cost the most, followed by tools I had to buy like a welder and so forth.
All in all I'd say it's under $2000 -- but I can't give you an exact figure. I was the "labor" and the time is uncountable but it's a whole lot over about a 6 month period for the inital SAS, but it wasn't until April that it was a 4x4.
You'd have to be exceptionally blessed to have gotten some of the "deals" I got -- my axle and suspension brackets, 4" F-150 lift springs, radius arms and so forth were from a 1979 F-150 scrapped here at the steel mill. It's not everyday you get a free axle and parts. I had to sandblast and rebuild it all -- but it saved me beaucoup $$$. I traded some non-automotive stuff for a t-case and an old 4x4 A4LD to get an output shaft from, and so forth.
I don't know how familiar you are with my truck, but there's some info over on cardomain -- link in my signature -- and go to page 25 once you get there.

Zach, thanks, you bring the SAS phase 2 down to NM and we'll make some time to show you some wheeling! What is this phase 2, show me the link? If I wait long enough, i might be able to drive to your shop with axle in hand and drive home with a SAS all in one weekend!!
Gildo, meeting in co sounds good to me, thats only like ~400 to denver I think. And i know there is some sweet places to wheel there.

Yes this sounds like a great time!
Adrian, I am already planning my SAS 3 on another truck in less than a weeks time :) Stay tuned in June.
My SAS #2 is consisting of 37s, locked, Dana 60 rear, D44 front, full width, 4 wheel disc brakes, high steer, and fuel cell setup.
Current pics start around page 54 in my SAS thread.

Yes, the SAS threads are the all-time winners around here for discussion. They helped me think some things out for sure. I haven't had much to say in them, but I've watched quite a bit -- though not all pages of all threads FOR SURE. If I'd done that, I would still be reading them and my SAS would never have beeen done, lol.
