I have a stupid question

I have a 4.0 V6 automatic ranger and my tach shows 6,000 rpms but no redline, my stupid question is what is the redline on my truck? When i put the pedal to the floor, it drops down the gears and revs up to about 5 grand and then switches gears. Anybody with any info, please share.

I would think the 'redline' would be around 4500 or 5000 rpms. I'm not sure though.

My 01 that had an Auto, if you would Floor it would go all the way to the end of the tach and then shift. The rev limiter won't let you get to redline so they don't put it on the tach. I would guess a Redline would be somewhere around 6500 RPMs

ive had the tach in my truck clear over to 35-40 mph, who knows what the actual RPM was.

but anyhow it wont hurt anything to let it shift anyhting below 6k. i know if i punch my truck it will climb to about 5800 and shift.

i wish i had a pic when the tach was that high but this pic gives an example of where it was.

are you crazy? 4500? that is barely turning the engine.

here is a vid of my truck going over 4500 several times.

On a regular basis my truck has seen 6000 rpm or more. Granted it is also a five speed manual they will go that high.

Off memory I think my auto will shift around 5500 - 5800 at WOT

I'll double check that at Lunch:)

Did a little test during lunch. Truck specks are 2003 4.0 SOHC 4x4 auto. Completely stock motor.

WOT from standing start

1st to 2nd 5600 RPMs
2nd to 3rd 5500 RPMs
3rd to 4th 5500 RPMs

I only did that once but jumping on it when already moving around 40 mph (I have no idea what gear) the truck consistently shifted at 5400-5500

I also have no idea how accurate the tach really is.

do you wanna know redline or grenade point?

6630 is what I think I read the grenade point being per Bob. Since it's auto I don't think it matters what redline is cuz it's gonna shift when it wants. if you reprogram it 5500-5800 is where I'd cap it off at.

Are we talking about shift point or rev limit ? I always thought "red line" ment maximum revs or the rev limit. The shift points of an automatic has nothing to do with "red line". Shift points are controlled by the computer and can be changed with a tuner. The rev limit on a 4.0L SOHC I thought was 6,100 RPM. Either way the computer will not you go past the rev limit, I think it shuts off the fuel at the injectors at 6,100 RPM.

My truck doesn't even HAVE a Tach!!!!!! Chuck Norris did a roundhouse kick to it and knocked the Tack all the way out the truck. He said I didn't need it and that if I wanted to live I'd learn to shift by ear.

Luckily I have good ears and he let me live...and he only half powered the roundhouse so i was able to fix the body damage.

if this was true mine would have blown up. its been past that more then once.

there are alot of factors in the red line and whether is will blow or not. but as far as red line who cares.

how do you know its been past 6630 rpms? your tach only goes to 6000 nerd!

even with a programmer, in your auto there is NO WAY your tranny has EVER shifted at 6600+rpms.

I'm not sure about the redline, but as far as shift points go, shift somewhere between 5500 and 6000 for the most power.
